18 02 Waste related to research, diagnosis, treatment or prevention of diseases, including animals
In today's world, medical research, diagnosis and treatment of diseases in both humans and animals are an integral part of our lives. However, these processes, although vitally necessary, lead to the formation of a significant amount of waste, which is a serious environmental and sanitary problem. Waste related to medical research and treatment may contain biohazardous materials, chemical reagents, toxic substances, radioactive components, and other hazardous elements.
Health care waste includes, in particular, residues from laboratory tests, used instruments, drug residues, contaminated materials and even animal carcasses. All of these components must be properly processed and disposed of to prevent the spread of infections, toxins, and other harmful substances. The lack of proper management of waste related to research, diagnosis, treatment or prevention of diseases, including animals, can lead to serious consequences for both human health and the environment.
The most dangerous are biological wastes that contain animal remains or infected materials that can become a source of infection for humans or other animals. In addition, chemical wastes generated from treatment and research can adversely affect water resources, soils, and air if not properly disposed of. Therefore, the issue of proper management of these wastes is critically important for ensuring environmental safety and public health. Services for waste management, collection and treatment: Waste related to research, diagnosis, treatment or prevention of diseases, including animals. Code of NPV 18 02.
Waste related to research, diagnosis, treatment or prevention of diseases, including animals. Code in accordance with the National List of Waste 18 02. Operations in accordance with Appendices 1, 2 to the Law of Ukraine "On Waste Management" D10, D13.
A pity for the environment and people
Waste generated as a result of medical research, diagnosis and treatment has a significant negative impact on the environment. Waste containing toxic chemicals or radioactive components is particularly dangerous. If such wastes enter the environment without proper treatment, they can contaminate water resources, soils and the atmosphere, which in turn lead to threats to biodiversity and ecosystem health.
Biological waste, such as animal remains or contaminated materials, can become a source of pathogens that can infect both wild and domestic animal species, as well as humans. This, in turn, can cause disease outbreaks and epidemics. Chemicals used in treatment or research processes can seep into groundwater, contaminating it and posing a threat to drinking water.
- Toxic chemicals can remain active for a long time, which increases the risk of their impact on the environment;
- Radioactive waste can have a long decay period, making it dangerous for the environment for decades or even centuries;
- Biological waste can become a source of contamination for many species of animals, including humans.
Pity for people
Waste resulting from medical research and treatment poses a serious threat to human health. Biological waste, such as infected materials or animal remains, can cause infectious diseases to spread to humans. For example, improper handling of such waste can lead to infection of the personnel of medical facilities or workers involved in the transportation and destruction of waste.
Chemical waste also poses a threat to health. Toxic substances can cause poisoning, allergic reactions and other serious health problems. If such substances enter water resources or soils, they can cause disease among the population living near the contaminated areas.
- Infectious diseases can be transmitted through biological waste if it is not handled properly;
- Chemicals can cause serious health problems, including poisoning and chronic disease;
- Radioactive waste can cause cancer and other serious illnesses, especially among those who come in contact with such materials.
Ways to reduce harm
In order to minimize the negative impact of waste related to research, diagnosis, treatment or prevention of diseases, it is necessary to implement effective methods of environmental management. Such methods include the proper collection, sorting, transportation and treatment (D13) of waste, taking into account its hazard.
First of all, it is necessary to ensure proper training of personnel working with medical waste. This includes instruction on the safe handling of biological, chemical, and radioactive materials, as well as procedures for their processing.
- Collection and sorting of waste by category allows more efficient management of its processing and destruction (D10);
- The use of modern technologies for the disposal of hazardous materials reduces the risk to the environment and human health;
- Ensuring control over the transportation of waste minimizes the risk of its entering the environment;
- Implementation of environmental monitoring systems helps to detect and respond to possible threats in a timely manner.
