Textile waste is a significant environmental problem, which is getting worse every year due to the increase in production and consumption of textile products. These wastes occur at different stages of the textile life cycle: from production to consumption and recycling. The main problem is the ineffective management of textile waste, which leads to significant losses of resources and environmental pollution.

Modern textile production is characterized by a high level of use of raw materials and energy. The mechanical processing of textile waste, including sorting, shredding, compaction and granulation, creates a large amount of waste that requires effective management. The operations of collecting, sorting, crushing and processing (D13) textile waste often leave behind large volumes of secondary waste that cannot be reused or recycled.

These wastes may contain synthetic fibers, dyes and other chemicals that make their further use difficult. In addition, textile waste that has not been properly treated can end up in landfills, where it decomposes over decades, releasing harmful substances into the environment.

Thanks to fast fashion and the short life cycle of many textiles, consumers often replace clothing and other textiles even if they are still usable.
