Recovery of ferrous metals from bottom ash slag

19 01 02 Ferrous metals extracted from bottom ash slag

whyneed

Today, the issue of effective waste management is becoming more and more relevant due to the increase in the amount of waste and the increase in the environmental burden on the planet. One of the problems that needs special attention is – is the extraction of ferrous metals from the bottom ash slags formed during the burning or pyrolysis of waste. This process is important not only from the point of view of preserving natural resources, but also for reducing damage to the environment and human health. In this article, we will consider in more detail all aspects of this problem, starting with its description and ending with possible ways to reduce the negative impact.

Bottom ash slag is formed as a by-product during the incineration or pyrolysis of various types of waste, including household, industrial and construction waste. They contain a significant amount of ferrous metals such as iron, steel, cast iron and others. However, due to the complex chemical composition and the presence of toxic elements, these metals are often lost, which leads to the need to develop effective methods for their extraction.

The main problems associated with ferrous metal waste in bottom ash are:

  • significant amount of waste that needs processing;
  • high cost of metal extraction processes;
  • requirement of special equipment for waste collection, sorting and processing;
  • risks of environmental pollution due to careless handling of waste.

Operations for collection, sorting, crushing and processing of ferrous metal waste extracted from bottom ash slags are necessary for maximum extraction of useful resources and minimization of environmental impact. However, these operations require significant investments in technology and management. Services for waste management, collection and processing: Ferrous metals extracted from bottom ash slags Code of NPV 19 01 02.

Ferrous metals extracted from bottom ash slag. Code in accordance with the National List of Waste 19 01 02. Operations in accordance with Appendices 1, 2 to the Law of Ukraine "On Waste Management" D13, D15.

A pity for the environment and people

howutilize

Ferous metal waste remaining in bottom ash can pose a serious threat to the environment. If not properly disposed of, toxic substances can seep into soil and water, causing pollution.

The main environmental threats associated with ferrous metal waste include:

  • pollution of soils with heavy metals, which deteriorates the quality of the land and reduces productivity;
  • pollution of water resources, which can lead to the death of aquatic organisms and poisoning of people;
  • release of toxic substances into the air during improper storage or processing of waste.

Methods of environmental management of ferrous metal waste extracted from bottom ash slags should include control over all stages of their life cycle – from collection and transportation to final storage or processing. This will help reduce the negative impact on the environment and promote sustainable development.

Pity for people

Environmental pollution with heavy metals poses a serious threat to human health. Even small concentrations of these substances can cause serious diseases, especially with prolonged exposure.

The main risks to human health include:

  • poisoning with heavy metals, which can cause malfunction of the nervous system, liver, kidneys and other organs;
  • increased risk of developing cancer due to long-term contact with toxic substances;
  • allergic reactions and skin diseases arising from contact with contaminated materials;
  • risk for future generations due to the effect of toxic substances on the reproductive system.

Management of ferrous metal waste extracted from bottom ash slag requires special measures to protect workers involved in waste treatment, as well as to minimize the impact on the population living near waste storage and treatment sites.

Ways to reduce harm

whyneed

Reduction of damage from ferrous metal waste extracted from bottom ash slag is possible if effective technologies are used and environmental management principles are followed. Among the main activities, we can highlight:

  • implementation of modern technologies for extracting metals from waste with minimal impact on the environment;
  • organization of special landfills for safe storage  (D15) residual waste;
  • creating a control system for waste collection, sorting and processing processes (D13);
  • transportation of ferrous metal waste extracted from bottom ash slag, taking into account all safety requirements.

Methods of environmental management of ferrous metal waste extracted from bottom ash slags should involve a comprehensive approach that takes into account both technical and organizational aspects. This will minimize risks to the environment and people's health.
