The production, preparation, supply and use of pharmaceuticals are important components of the modern medical industry, which is constantly developing and providing society with the necessary medicines for the treatment and prevention of diseases. However, simultaneously with the development of this industry, there is a problem of waste management, which is generated at all stages of the pharmaceutical cycle: from production to the final use of drugs.

Waste from the production, preparation, supply and use of pharmaceuticals includes a wide range of substances: from raw material residues, unusable drugs and packaging, to residual chemical reagents used in the production process. These wastes have a complex chemical composition, which makes them dangerous for the environment and human health.

The problem of managing such waste is not only in its quantity, but also in the complexity of its disposal. The lack of proper methods of environmental management of waste from the production, preparation, supply and use of pharmaceuticals can lead to pollution of water resources, soil and atmosphere, as well as negative consequences for public health.

In order to reduce the harm from waste from the production, preparation, supply and use of pharmaceuticals, it is necessary to implement effective methods of environmental management of these wastes. One of the main approaches – it is the implementation of operations for collection, sorting, crushing and processing of waste at each stage of production and use of medicines.

It is also necessary to implement modern technologies of processing and neutralization of pharmaceutical waste, which would allow reducing their toxicity and volume. For example, the use of special filters (D9) to purify water from pharmaceutical substances can significantly reduce the risk of them entering natural bodies of water.

Environmental management of waste from the production, preparation, supply and use of pharmaceuticals also involves raising environmental culture among the population and employees of the pharmaceutical industry. It is important to conduct regular trainings and educational programs aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of pharmaceutical waste and methods of its safe storage (D15) and destruction.

In addition, legislative initiatives should be developed and implemented that would regulate the transportation of waste from the production, preparation, supply and use of pharmaceuticals, as well as ensure proper control over their collection and processing.
