Waste from the extraction of metallic minerals

01 01 01 Metal mining waste (ore)

whyneed

The mining of metallic minerals such as iron, copper, gold and other metals is an important industry sector that provides raw materials for many sectors of the economy. However, this process is accompanied by the formation of a large amount of waste. Ore waste consists of the rock that remains after the extraction of metals from the ore, and contains a significant amount of hazardous substances.

Methods of environmental management of metal mineral (ore) extraction waste are critically important to ensure minimization of their negative impact on the environment. The problem is that this waste can be toxic and contain heavy metals that can leach into soil and water resources, causing pollution.

Total volumes of ore mining waste can reach millions of tons each year, and if not properly managed, it can accumulate on the surface of the earth, forming large dumps. These dumps are often left open, exposed to atmospheric conditions, which can lead to further release of pollutants into the environment.

It should also be taken into account that some ore waste may be radioactive, which creates additional risks. For example, uranium mines leave behind waste that contains radioactive isotopes that can be dangerous to living organisms even in low concentrations.

An important aspect of the problem is also the impact on water resources. During ore extraction, large volumes of water are often used to wash and beneficiate the minerals. This process produces liquid waste that may contain toxic chemicals such as cyanides and heavy metals. If these wastes are not managed carelessly, they can enter rivers and groundwater, causing serious pollution.

The waste ore problem also includes impacts on biodiversity. The location of mining enterprises in natural ecosystems can lead to the destruction of the habitats of many species of plants and animals, which leads to their disappearance or displacement. Large areas occupied by waste may become unsuitable for agricultural use or natural regeneration.

In addition, the extraction of ore minerals is accompanied by emissions of dust and gases containing harmful substances. These emissions can cause air pollution and affect the health of people living near mining facilities. Dust storms formed around waste dumps can carry hazardous substances over considerable distances, making it difficult to control their impact. A pity for the environment and people

howutilize

Waste from metal mining can seriously affect the environment. Environmental management of metal mineral (ore) mining waste is necessary to reduce their impact. The main problems include:

  • pollution of water resources;
  • soil pollution;
  • loss of biodiversity;
  • violation of ecosystems;
  • formation of acid wastes.

Water pollution is one of the most serious problems. Metals in waste can leach into groundwater and rivers, contaminating them and making them unfit for consumption. Management of metal mining (ore) waste must take into account all possible risks to the environment and ensure proper waste treatment.

Pity for people

Metal mining waste can have a significant negative impact on human health. The main risks include:

  • toxicity of heavy metals;
  • respiratory problems;
  • skin diseases;
  • disruption of the functions of internal organs;
  • increasing the risk of oncological diseases.

Heavy metals such as lead, copper and mercury can cause serious poisoning. Environmental management of metal mineral (ore) mining waste should include measures to protect the health of workers and the population living near mining enterprises.

Ways to reduce harm

whyneed

Reduction of damage from metal mining waste is possible thanks to the application of modern technologies and management methods. The main measures include:

  • implementation of waste processing and reuse technologies;
  • use of biotechnologies to clean up contaminated areas;
  • ensuring safe storage and transportation of waste (D15);
  • application of environmental monitoring and control systems;
  • implementation of waste management standards and norms.

Operations for collection, sorting, crushing and processing (D13) of metal mining waste (ore) must be organized taking into account all environmental requirements. This will reduce the amount of waste and reduce its toxicity.

Waste of extraction of metallic minerals (ore). Code according to the National List of Waste 01 01 01. Operations according to Appendices 1, 2 to the Law of Ukraine “On Waste Management” D13, D15.
