whyneed

The production of dairy products is one of the most important branches of the food industry, which provides the population with the necessary nutrients. However, along with the production of such products, there is a significant amount of waste that can have a negative impact on the environment and human health. These wastes consist of various materials, including whey, milk residues, packaging materials, which require proper environmental management. In the article, we will consider the problems of dairy production waste, their harm to the environment and human health, as well as effective methods of reducing this harm.

Dairy production waste consists of a variety of components, which may include both organic and inorganic materials. The main wastes arising in the production process include:

  • whey, which is formed as a result of the production of cheese and yogurts;
  • residues of milk remaining after processing and cleaning;
  • packaging materials, including plastic, cardboard and other materials.

These wastes are often rich in organic matter that can decompose quickly, releasing methane and other greenhouse gases. In addition, packaging materials may contain hazardous chemicals that enter the environment, contaminating soil and water resources.

According to research, about 20 million tons of whey waste is generated annually in the world, most of which is not used properly. Improper management of dairy industry waste can lead to serious environmental problems, such as water pollution and reduced soil fertility. Waste management, collection and processing services: Dairy production waste Code of NPV 02 05.

A pity for the environment and people

howutilize

Dairy production waste has a significant negative impact on the environment. Whey waste left over from the production of cheese and other dairy products is particularly dangerous due to its high content of organic matter and its ability to cause eutrophication of water bodies. Eutrophication leads to excessive growth of algae, which can cause a lack of oxygen in the water and the death of aquatic organisms.

In addition, packaging materials, especially plastic, can break down into microplastics that pollute oceans and other water resources. These microplastic particles can accumulate in the bodies of marine animals, which negatively affects the ecosystem and can enter the food chain, reaching humans.

Also, dairy waste can pollute soils with heavy metals and other toxic substances, which reduces their fertility and negatively affects agricultural activity. The methods of ecological management of dairy production waste are important for preserving the environment and reducing the negative impact on nature.

Pity for people

Dairy production waste can also have serious consequences for human health. Contaminated water resulting from improper management of whey waste can lead to the spread of infectious diseases. Residues of milk and whey that enter natural water bodies can be a source of reproduction of pathogenic microorganisms, such as salmonella and Escherichia coli.

In addition, the use of hazardous chemicals in packaging materials can have long-term effects on human health. When in contact with food, these chemicals can enter the human body, causing various diseases, including allergies, hormonal disorders and even cancer.

In addition, soil contamination with heavy metals and other toxic substances, which can occur as a result of improper management of dairy industry waste, negatively affects the quality of grown food products, which, in turn, can harm health' ;yu people.

Ways to reduce harm

whyneed

In order to reduce the negative impact of dairy production waste on the environment and human health, it is necessary to implement effective methods of ecological waste management. One such method is the reuse (R7) of whey waste in the production of animal feed or biogas. This allows not only to reduce the amount of waste, but also to obtain additional economic benefits.

Operations for collection, sorting, crushing and processing (D13) of dairy production waste must be carried out taking into account all environmental standards in order to minimize their negative impact on the environment. Using environmentally friendly packaging materials that can be easily recycled or composted is also an important step in reducing the harmful impact on nature.

Dairy production waste should be transported in accordance with current environmental regulations to avoid environmental pollution during transportation. The introduction of innovative technologies in the production of dairy products, such as the use of biotechnology for waste processing, will also contribute to reducing their harmful effects.
