Waste from slag processes in primary and secondary production

10 07 01 Slags from primary and secondary production

whyneed

Slags are an integral part of metallurgical processes, especially in the mining and processing of precious metals such as silver, gold and platinum. During heat treatment of ore, both in primary and secondary production, significant volumes of slag are formed. These wastes contain both useful and harmful substances that can affect the environment and human health. It is important to realize the scope of the problem and take the necessary measures to manage slag waste.

Thermal processes in metallurgy, in particular during the extraction and purification of silver, gold and platinum, are accompanied by the formation of slag. Slags are residual materials consisting of metal oxides, silicates and other components that are formed as a result of ore melting. Depending on the production technology, slags can contain valuable metals, such as gold or silver, as well as harmful impurities, such as heavy metals and toxic compounds.

In the process of primary production, when the ore first passes through heat treatment, the largest amount of slag is formed. Secondary production, which includes waste processing or the use of secondary materials, also generates a significant amount of slag, but it may have a different composition and properties. In any case, slags require proper management because they can harm the environment and human health. Services for waste management, collection and processing: Slags from primary and secondary production Code of NPV 10 07 01.

Slags from primary and secondary production. Code according to the National List of Waste 10 07 01. Operations according to Appendices 1, 2 to the Law of Ukraine "On Waste Management" D13, R5.

A pity for the environment and people

howutilize

Slags from the thermal processes of metallurgy can have a significant impact on the environment if they are not properly processed. The main environmental problems are related to soil, water and air pollution.

Soil pollution occurs due to improper storage or burial of slags that contain heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, copper and other toxic elements. These metals can seep into groundwater, which leads to its contamination and entry into food chains.

Water pollution can occur due to runoff from slag storage sites into rivers, lakes, and underground aquifers. Toxic components of slags, dissolving in water, can harm aquatic ecosystems, fish, plants, and even people who consume this water.

Air pollution occurs during transportation of slag waste from primary and secondary production or during their processing. Small particles of slag can enter the air, which leads to the formation of dust, which has a harmful effect on air quality and people's health.

Pity for people

The impact of slags from thermal processes on human health is a serious problem, as they may contain toxic substances that can cause various diseases.

The main harmful substances contained in slags include heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium and others. When these substances enter the human body, they can cause:

  • disruption of the nervous system;
  • kidney and liver disease;
  • respiratory diseases;
  • oncological diseases;
  • developmental disorders in children.

Small particles of slag entering the air can cause respiratory diseases, including asthma, bronchitis and other lung diseases. Contact with heavy metals can cause allergic reactions, dermatitis and other skin diseases.

It is important to note that harmful substances contained in slag can accumulate in the human body for a long time, which makes their effects even more dangerous.

Ways to reduce harm

whyneed

The management of slag waste from primary and secondary production requires an integrated approach, which includes various methods of ecological management of slag waste.

First of all, it is necessary to carry out operations of collection, sorting, crushing and processing (D13) of slag waste from primary and secondary production. This will make it possible to separate useful components from harmful ones and reduce the volume of waste to be stored or processed.

An important element is the transportation of slag waste from primary and secondary production to places of their processing or storage. It is necessary to ensure proper tightness of vehicles and avoid spilling of slag during transportation.

One of the effective methods of reducing the damage from slags is their reuse (R5). For example, slag can be used in construction to make cement or road pavement. This will reduce the volume of waste and reduce the burden on the environment.

To reduce the impact of slag on the environment and human health, it is also necessary to ensure proper storage of slag. Storage places must be equipped with protection systems against leakage of toxic substances into the soil and water, as well as air quality control systems.
