Cleaning sludges and filter cakes from gas cleaning

Waste from the thermal processes of silver, gold and platinum metallurgy create serious problems for the environment and human health. One of the key problems is sludge and filter cakes, which are formed in the gas purification process. They are hazardous waste containing heavy metals and other toxic substances. Their improper management can lead to significant environmental and health harmful consequences.

Sludges and filter cakes from gas treatment (cleaning) are the result of thermal processes used to extract precious metals such as silver, gold and platinum. This waste consists of fine particles that contain high concentrations of toxic substances, including heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium and arsenic. They may also contain organic contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

Although these wastes can be recycled to recover valuable metals, their improper management can lead to environmental pollution. For example, dumping sludge into water can cause water pollution, and storing it outdoors can lead to soil and air pollution. • reuse and recycling (R5): sludges and cakes can be reused or processed to extract valuable metals and other useful components, which allows to reduce their volumes and reduce the negative impact on the environment;
• safe storage and transportation (D15): slurries and cakes must be stored in specially designated areas, protected from leaks and atmospheric influences, and transported in compliance with all safety requirements.
• operations for collection, sorting, crushing and processing of sludges and filter cakes from gas treatment (purification) must be carried out taking into account environmental norms and standards (D13).
