02 07 Waste from the production of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (except coffee, tea and cocoa)
Production of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages is one of the most significant segments of the food industry. However, along with its growth, there is also a big problem — management of waste generated in the production process. These wastes include not only the remains of raw materials, but also large volumes of waste water, as well as packaging materials. The main difficulty is the correct organization of waste collection, sorting, crushing and processing operations in order to minimize their negative impact on the environment and human health.
According to research, every stage of production, from fermentation to packaging, is accompanied by the formation of different types of waste. For example, in the production of alcohol, a large amount of waste is generated in the distillation process, which uses a large amount of water and energy. In the non-alcoholic sector, significant volumes of waste are generated during the production of syrups and concentrates.
An important aspect is that a significant part of this waste can be dangerous for the environment. For example, alcohol production waste contains the remains of yeast and other organic substances, which can cause eutrophication if they get into water — the process of excessive enrichment of water bodies with nutrients, which leads to massive reproduction of algae and a decrease in oxygen levels.
In addition, packaging materials such as plastic bottles can remain in the environment for decades, harming flora and fauna. The transportation of waste from the production of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (except coffee, tea and cocoa) is another problem, as improper transportation can lead to additional pollution. Waste management, collection and processing services: Waste from the production of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (except coffee, tea and cocoa) NPV code 02 07.
Waste from the production of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (except coffee, tea and cocoa). Code in accordance with the National List of Waste 02 07. Operations in accordance with Appendices 1, 2 to the Law of Ukraine "On Waste Management" R7.
A pity for the environment and people
Waste generated during the production of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages has a significant negative impact on the environment. The main sources of damage are emissions of organic substances into water bodies, use of chemicals during production and disposal of packaging materials. Methods of environmental management of waste from the production of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (except coffee, tea and cocoa) aim to minimize these negative consequences, but they are not yet sufficiently developed.
One of the most devastating consequences is the pollution of water resources. Organic waste, falling into water bodies, increases the level of biological oxygen consumption (BOD), which leads to a decrease in the concentration of oxygen in the water and, as a result, to the death of fish and other aquatic organisms. In addition, the use of chemicals such as pesticides for processing raw materials or antiseptics for cleaning equipment can cause soil and water pollution.
Another serious problem is packaging waste. Plastic bottles, aluminum cans and other materials used to package alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages can remain in the environment for decades, contaminating land and water. They also contribute to the formation of microplastics, which enter the food chain, negatively affecting the health of people and animals.
Thus, the management of waste from the production of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (except coffee, tea and cocoa) is a key task to reduce the negative impact on the environment. It is necessary to develop more effective methods of collecting, sorting and processing waste, as well as to implement stricter regulations regarding their transportation.
Pity for people
Waste from the production of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages can cause significant damage not only to the environment, but also to human health. One of the main risks is exposure to chemicals that are used during production and may remain in the waste. These substances can cause serious diseases such as cancer, respiratory diseases and allergies.
Especially dangerous is the impact on production workers who have daily contact with waste. They may be exposed to toxic fumes from waste disposal or come into contact with chemicals that can cause burns or other injuries. Transportation of waste from the production of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (except coffee, tea and cocoa) can also be a source of danger if the necessary safety measures are not followed.
In addition, the pollution of water resources caused by the dumping of organic waste can lead to the spread of infectious diseases. Bacteria and viruses multiplying in contaminated water can enter the human body while bathing, drinking water, or consuming fish and other aquatic products.
Packaging materials such as plastic can contain harmful chemicals that are released into the environment and can leach into food. This creates an additional health risk, as these substances can accumulate in the body and cause various diseases.
Ways to reduce harm
Reducing the negative impact of waste from the production of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages on the environment and human health is possible thanks to the implementation of more effective methods of environmental management. This involves the introduction of modern technologies and processes that allow to minimize the amount of generated waste and ensure their safe processing.
- application of waste water treatment technologies that allow reducing emissions of organic substances and chemicals into reservoirs;
- use of more environmentally friendly packaging materials that decompose faster in nature or can be recycled (R7);
- implementation of a waste sorting and processing system at the place of their generation, which allows to reduce the costs of waste transportation and storage;
- training workers in safe methods of handling and transporting waste to reduce risks to their health;
- development and implementation of environmental programs that involve reducing the amount of waste at all stages of production, from raw materials to the final product.
Environmental management of waste from the production of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (except coffee, tea and cocoa) is an important step on the way to preserving natural resources and ensuring the health of the population. It also promotes the reputation of companies that adhere to high standards of environmental responsibility.
