16 11 Lining and refractories waste
Liner and refractories waste is one of the most difficult problems in the field of industrial production and environmental management. These wastes are generated during metallurgical processes, when refractory materials used for lining furnaces and other high-temperature installations become unsuitable for further use. The problem of disposal of such waste is becoming more and more urgent, as the volumes of their accumulation are growing, and their composition may contain dangerous substances that pose a threat to both the environment and human health.
The problem of lining waste and refractories lies in their complex composition and high resistance to environmental influences. Refractories, such as magnesium, chromite, dolomite and other materials, are used to protect equipment from high temperatures and chemical influences. However, over time, these materials lose their properties and become waste that cannot be directly used or easily recycled.
In metallurgical processes, the lining is subjected to intense mechanical, thermal and chemical effects, which leads to its degradation. Waste materials can contain various impurities such as heavy metals, organic compounds and other toxic substances. Disposing of such waste without preliminary treatment can cause soil, water and air pollution, which makes the problem of their management particularly acute. Waste management, collection and processing services: Lining and refractories waste Code of NPV 16 11.
In addition, lining waste often contains valuable metals such as chromium, magnesium and other elements that could be reused, but their extraction requires complex and expensive technologies. In this regard, the management of such waste requires an integrated approach, which includes operations for the collection, sorting, crushing and processing of lining and refractories waste, as well as their safe storage and transportation.

A pity for the environment and people
The damage to the environment caused by waste liners and refractories is due to several main factors. First of all, it is the high toxicity of many components of this waste. For example, chromium refractories contain chromium (VI), which is highly toxic and carcinogenic. The leakage of such substances into the soil or water sources can lead to serious pollution and threaten the health of people and ecosystems.
The second important aspect is the large amount of this waste. The metallurgical industry generates tons of lining materials every year, and most of them cannot be directly recycled due to their chemical inertness and resistance to decomposition. This leads to the accumulation of waste in landfills, which occupy large areas and create additional pressure on natural resources.
In addition, the transportation of lining waste and refractories also poses a threat to the environment. Spills or leaks of toxic substances may occur during transportation, which leads to local pollution of territories. To minimize this risk, it is necessary to implement strict rules for the transportation and storage of such waste.
Pity for people
The impact of waste liners and refractories on human health is another important issue. The greatest threat is those waste components that have toxic or carcinogenic properties. For example, chromium refractories can emit chromium (VI) in the form of dust or solutions, which causes chemical burns, skin and eye irritation, and is also a cause of respiratory diseases.
In some cases, workers involved in the collection, sorting or processing of waste liners and refractories may be exposed to high concentrations of toxic substances. This can lead to acute or chronic poisoning, which requires constant medical supervision and the use of special protective equipment.
It is also important to consider the risks associated with the transportation of such waste. In the case of emergency situations or improper handling of waste, hazardous substances may be released into the air or water, which leads to environmental pollution and threatens the health of the population living nearby.
Ways to reduce harm
In order to reduce the damage caused by lining and refractories waste, it is necessary to implement modern methods of ecological management of lining and refractories waste. This includes optimization of the processes of collection, sorting and processing (D13) of waste, as well as the development of new technologies for their processing.
One effective approach is to reuse materials contained in lining waste. This allows to reduce the amount of waste and reduce the costs of extraction and processing of new resources. For example, magnesium and dolomite refractories can be reused in some production processes after appropriate treatment.
In addition, control over the transportation of lining waste and refractories plays an important role. For this, it is necessary to develop and implement safe transportation standards, which provide for the use of special containers, control over the tightness of packaging and monitoring of the state of waste during transportation.
Modern technologies also allow reducing the content of toxic substances in lining waste, which makes them less dangerous for the environment and people. This may include chemical treatment, heat treatment or biological methods (D8) to neutralize or remove toxic components.
