02 04 99 Other waste of this subgroup
Sugar production is one of the most important sectors of agricultural industry in Ukraine. However, along with the production of sugar, a large amount of waste is generated, which belongs to the subgroup of other waste of this industry. These wastes include beet residues, pulp, molasses, as well as other waste from the production process, which are often not used efficiently and can cause significant damage to the environment and human health.
One of the biggest problems associated with sugar production waste is its volume and variety. Every year, sugar factories accumulate thousands of tons of waste, which requires proper management and processing. The lack of effective methods of neutralization leads to the accumulation of waste in landfills or their uncontrolled storage on the territory of factories.
The pulp that remains after the extraction of sugar from beets is often not used efficiently and is subject to rotting, which contributes to the release of methane - a powerful greenhouse gas. In addition, molasses produced during production can contaminate water resources if not properly processed.
There is also a problem of neutralizing the residues of chemical reagents used in the process of sugar production. They may contain hazardous substances that, if mishandled, may harm the environment and the health of workers and local residents. Services for waste management, collection and processing: Other waste of this subgroup, NPV code 02 04 99.
Other waste of this subgroup. Code according to the National List of Waste 02 04 99. Operations according to Appendices 1, 2 to the Law of Ukraine “On Waste Management” R5, R1.
A pity for the environment and people
Sugar production waste can cause significant damage to the environment. One of the biggest threats is soil and water pollution. For example, the pulp that remains after processing beets releases methane when it rots, which is a powerful greenhouse gas and contributes to global warming.
Molasses, if not processed properly, can enter water sources, contaminating them with organic matter and heavy metals. This leads to the death of fish and other aquatic organisms, as well as to the deterioration of the quality of water for human and animal consumption.
Also, waste chemical reagents used in the production of sugar can contain toxic substances that, if they get into the soil or water, can cause long-term damage to ecosystems. Air pollution from rotting organic waste also contributes to the deterioration of air quality in the surrounding areas.
Pity for people
Sugar production waste can have serious consequences for human health. Contamination of water and soil with heavy metals and organic substances can lead to various diseases in local residents, including poisoning, allergic reactions and chronic diseases.
Also, workers in sugar factories may be at risk through contact with chemicals and hazardous waste. Improper waste management can lead to accidents and incidents that pose a threat to people's health and life.
Air polluted by sugar production waste can cause respiratory diseases in local residents, especially children and the elderly. Improper waste management can also contribute to the spread of infectious diseases if the waste is not stored properly and is subject to decay.
Ways to reduce harm
In order to reduce the harm from sugar production waste, it is necessary to apply effective methods of ecological management of other wastes of this subgroup. This includes the introduction of modern technologies for waste processing, as well as the development of environmental programs at the enterprise level.
Main harm reduction measures include:
- introduction of pulp composting technologies to obtain organic fertilizers (R5);
- processing of molasses into feed additives for animals or biogas (R1);
- creating a water resource quality control system;
- introduction of training and professional development programs for employees on safe waste management.
Environmental management of other wastes of this subgroup also includes operations of collection, sorting, crushing and processing of other wastes of this subgroup. Transportation of other wastes of this subgroup must be carried out in accordance with environmental norms and rules to prevent environmental pollution.
