17 04 01 Copper, bronze, brass
Construction and demolition waste is one of the biggest environmental problems of today. Among them, copper, bronze, and brass wastes are distinguished, which retain considerable value, but at the same time pose a threat to the environment and human health. Every year, the volume of such waste increases, which requires effective methods of their environmental management.
Modern construction and demolition of buildings generate a significant amount of waste, which may include the remains of copper, bronze, brass. These metals are often used in building structures, electrical systems, pipelines and other infrastructure elements. After the end of the life of buildings or due to their destruction during disasters, these materials become waste that needs proper management.
The soil removed from the contaminated areas where construction was carried out needs special attention. Such soil can contain hazardous chemicals and metals, including copper, bronze and brass, which causes additional difficulties in its processing and safe storage.
The lack of proper management of these wastes can lead to serious environmental problems, including heavy metal contamination of water resources, soil and atmosphere. Therefore, it is important to develop and implement effective methods of environmental management of copper, bronze, and brass waste. Services for waste management, collection and processing: Copper, bronze, brass NPV code 17 04 01.
Copper, bronze, brass. Code according to the National List of Waste 17 04 01. Operations according to Appendices 1, 2 to the Law of Ukraine "On Waste Management" D13, R5.
A pity for the environment and people
Copper, bronze and brass wastes, if not properly managed, can cause significant negative environmental impacts. These metals can accumulate in the soil and water, contaminating them with toxic substances. This is especially dangerous for aquatic ecosystems, where metals can affect living organisms, disrupting their normal functioning and causing death.
In addition, the transportation of copper, bronze, brass waste without proper protection can lead to dispersion of metal particles in the air, which causes atmospheric pollution. This is especially relevant for areas where operations for collecting, sorting, crushing and processing copper, bronze, brass waste are carried out. The dust generated during these processes can enter the air and be transported over long distances, causing pollution even in remote areas.
There is also a risk of metals entering food chains through contaminated soils. Plants growing on such soils can accumulate copper, bronze and brass, which leads to their further distribution in food products. This poses a threat to the health of people and animals consuming such products.
Pity for people
Copper, bronze and brass in construction and demolition waste can be hazardous to human health. The impact of these metals on the body can be diverse, depending on the method of entry and concentration.
Ingestion of copper, bronze and brass through the respiratory tract, for example, during the transportation of copper, bronze, brass waste or processing, can cause irritation of the mucous membranes, coughing, and in cases of prolonged exposure - serious diseases of the respiratory system . In addition, when metal particles enter the lungs, chronic inflammation can develop, which contributes to the development of other diseases, such as bronchitis or asthma.
Contact with soil contaminated with copper, bronze or brass can cause dermatological problems such as rashes, irritation and in severe cases eczema. If these metals get into water and are used for drinking or cooking, it can lead to intoxication of the body. Symptoms of poisoning may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and more serious liver and kidney damage.
Long-term exposure to low concentrations of copper, bronze, and brass is particularly dangerous, as it can have a cumulative effect, gradually accumulating in body tissues and leading to chronic diseases. This is especially relevant for people who live near areas where copper, bronze, brass waste collection, sorting, crushing and processing operations are carried out.
Ways to reduce harm
In order to reduce the harm from copper, bronze and brass waste, it is important to implement effective methods of ecological waste management. This includes integrated approaches to the collection, sorting, treatment and transportation of such waste (D13).
First of all, it is necessary to ensure proper conditions for collecting and sorting waste. Metals such as copper, bronze and brass must be separated from other building materials to reduce the risk of their release into the environment. This can be achieved with the help of specialized equipment and technologies that allow efficient separation of different types of waste.
For the transportation of copper, bronze, brass waste, it is necessary to use hermetically sealed containers and vehicles that prevent the dispersion of metal particles in the air and pollution of the environment during transportation. It is also important to monitor the condition of such containers in order to exclude the possibility of their damage and leakage of metals.
Operations for collecting, sorting, crushing and processing copper, bronze, brass waste must be carried out in specially equipped rooms in compliance with all safety standards. This will reduce the risk of environmental pollution and ensure the safety of workers handling such waste.
One of the most effective methods of reducing the harm from waste copper, bronze and brass is their further processing (R5). This allows not only to reduce the volume of waste entering the environment, but also to return these valuable metals to the production cycle. For this, it is necessary to implement modern technologies that allow for the most effective extraction of metals from waste and minimize losses.
