17 02 Wood, glass and plastics

The main problem of wood, glass and plastic waste is their extremely long degradation in nature. Although wood is a natural material, if mismanaged, it can become a source of serious environmental pollution. Moisture that accumulates in wood contributes to the formation of mold and fungi that can contaminate soil and water. Glass is a less dangerous material, but its fragments can be traumatic for people and animals. Plastics are the most difficult to process due to their chemical stability and wide range of applications.

Irregular management of wood, glass and plastic waste leads to the accumulation of huge volumes of garbage that can remain in nature for centuries. Plastics, for example, can decompose for hundreds of years, polluting the environment with toxic substances. Wood, glass, and plastic waste collection, sorting, crushing, and processing operations must be efficiently organized to minimize negative impacts on ecosystems. In order to reduce the damage caused by wood, glass and plastic waste, it is necessary to implement effective methods of ecological waste management. The management of wood, glass and plastic waste should be based on the principles of minimizing the generation of waste, its reuse and recycling.

Methods of ecological waste management

Among the main methods, we can distinguish:

• sorting of waste to select recyclable materials;
• transportation of wood, glass and plastic waste to specialized enterprises for processing;
• use of modern technologies for processing and reuse of waste; (R7);
• creating conditions for safe storage (D15) of waste to avoid its release into the environment.

It is especially important to introduce technologies that allow to reduce greenhouse gas emissions during the management of wood, glass and plastic waste.
