20 02 03 Other non-biodegradable waste
The problem of waste management is one of the most urgent environmental challenges of our time. Other, non-biodegradable waste, which includes garden and park waste, as well as cemetery waste, occupies a special place among the variety of waste. This category of waste has specific characteristics that complicate their processing and create additional environmental risks. Despite their natural nature, these wastes can have a serious impact on the environment and human health if they are not properly collected, treated and disposed of.
Garden and park waste, including cemetery waste, are typical examples of non-biodegradable waste. This waste can include leaves, branches, flowers, grass, as well as tree and shrub trimmings. In the case of cemeteries, the remains of funeral wreaths, flowers, wooden and metal elements are also added to this list. Although these materials seem natural at first glance, they have more complex properties that prevent their rapid decomposition in natural conditions. For example:
- wood can take decades to decompose, especially if it is treated with chemicals;
- metal elements are not biodegradable at all;
- plastic elements can remain in the environment for centuries.
One of the main problems is the improper management of these wastes. The lack of appropriate methods of collection and processing leads to their accumulation in open areas, which causes pollution of the soil, water resources and atmosphere. Such waste is often burned, which releases toxic substances and poses an additional threat to human health. The operations of collecting, sorting, crushing and processing other non-biodegradable waste often do not meet modern environmental requirements. Services for waste management, collection and processing: Other non-biodegradable waste Code of NPV 20 02 03.
Other non-biodegradable waste. Code in accordance with the National List of Waste 20 02 03. Operations in accordance with Appendices 1, 2 to the Law of Ukraine "On Waste Management" R7.
A pity for the environment and people
Non-biodegradable waste has a significant negative impact on the environment. They cause soil, water and air pollution that affects all levels of ecosystems. One of the main negative consequences is:
- soil pollution: the accumulation of waste on the ground causes their decomposition with the formation of toxic substances that penetrate into the soil;
- pollution of water resources: waste accumulated in open spaces can enter water bodies, contaminating them with chemical substances;
- air pollution: incineration of waste leads to emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere, which deteriorates air quality and causes the greenhouse effect.
Environmental management of other non-biodegradable wastes is extremely important for environmental protection. However, the imperfection of modern methods of processing and disposal of such waste leads to serious environmental problems. In particular, cemeteries often use artificial materials for making wreaths and other decorative elements, which eventually become waste and contribute to environmental pollution.
Pity for people
Incorrect management of non-biodegradable waste poses a serious threat to human health. In particular, cemetery waste containing metals, plastic and chemically treated wood can cause a number of health problems. Toxic substances released during the decomposition or burning of such waste enter the air, water and soil, and through food chains can adversely affect human health.
The main health risks include:
- respiratory diseases: toxic emissions during waste burning can cause asthma, bronchitis and other diseases of the respiratory system;
- oncological diseases: long-term exposure to toxic substances released during decomposition or burning can increase the risk of developing cancers;
- harmful effects on the nervous system: some toxic substances contained in the waste can affect the nervous system, causing sleep disorders, headaches and other neurological symptoms.
Environmental management of other non-biodegradable wastes is a key element in preventing harm to human health. It is necessary to ensure proper collection, sorting and processing of such waste in order to minimize their negative impact on the environment and human health.
Ways to reduce harm
In order to reduce the damage caused by non-biodegradable waste, it is necessary to implement integrated approaches to their management. Methods of environmental management of other non-biodegradable waste should include:
- implementation of a separate waste collection system: this will allow more efficient processing and disposal of waste, minimizing its negative impact on the environment;
- use of environmentally friendly materials: replacing artificial materials with natural or biodegradable alternatives will reduce the amount of non-biodegradable waste;
- development of recycling technologies (R7): improvement of waste processing methods will reduce their quantity and toxicity;
- educational work: increasing public awareness of the dangers of improper waste management will contribute to a more responsible attitude to their collection and recycling.
An important aspect is the transportation of soil and stone waste from the places of their formation to specialized enterprises where they can be properly processed. This will help to avoid environmental pollution and reduce risks to people's health.
