20 02 01 Biodegradable waste
Biodegradable waste constitutes a significant part of waste generated in garden and park areas, as well as in cemeteries. These wastes, which include leaves, grass, flowers and other organic materials, are an important component of the ecosystem, but mismanaged can lead to serious environmental and social problems. Methods of ecological management of biodegradable waste play a key role in preserving the environment and ensuring public health safety.
Biodegradable waste seems harmless at first glance, but its accumulation and improper treatment can become a serious problem for modern society. This especially applies to garden and park waste, as well as waste from cemeteries, where large volumes of organic materials are concentrated. Garden waste includes grass clippings, fallen leaves, branch clippings, and other organic debris generated during landscaping. Park waste, in addition to the mentioned elements, can also contain flowers that visitors leave on the territory. Graveyard waste adds specific elements such as wreaths, bouquets and other organic materials left over from ceremonies.
The main problem is the huge volume of this waste, which often does not find the right way of management. Traditional methods of collecting and transporting biodegradable waste do not always meet the requirements of environmental safety. The lack of proper places to recycle or compost these materials causes them to accumulate in large quantities, occupying significant areas in landfills. In addition, in the case of improper treatment, such waste can become a source of unpleasant odors and attract pests, which creates additional inconvenience for people living nearby. Waste management, collection and processing services: Biodegradable waste Code of NPV 20 02 01.
Biodegradable waste. Code according to the National List of Waste 20 02 01. Operations according to Appendices 1, 2 to the Law of Ukraine "On Waste Management" D13.
A pity for the environment and people
Biodegradable waste can cause significant damage to the environment if biodegradable waste is not properly managed. First of all, the decomposition of organic materials produces methane - a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. The accumulation of such waste in large quantities without proper control can lead to an increase in the concentration of this gas in the atmosphere, which increases the greenhouse effect and contributes to global warming.
In addition, improper management of garden, park and cemetery waste can lead to soil and water pollution. During the decomposition of organic materials, toxic substances are formed, which can penetrate into the soil and groundwater, worsening their quality. This is especially dangerous for agricultural land, where contaminated soils can negatively affect yield and plant health. Pollution of surface water bodies is also possible, which leads to eutrophication - excessive enrichment of aquatic ecosystems with nutrients, which causes rapid growth of algae and deterioration of water quality.
Another problem is the decrease in air quality due to the burning of biodegradable waste. In many cases, particularly in rural areas, this waste is burned in the open air, which results in the release of harmful substances such as dioxins and furans. These toxic compounds pollute the atmosphere and can cause serious health problems in both humans and animals.
Pity for people
The harm that biodegradable waste can cause to human health is as important a problem as the harm to the environment. First of all, unpleasant odors arising in the process of decomposition of organic materials can cause significant discomfort for people who live or work near places of collection and storage of such waste. These smells are often the cause of residents' complaints and can affect the general well-being, causing headaches, nausea and even allergic reactions.
In addition, biodegradable waste can become a breeding ground for pests such as rodents, insects and other disease vectors. In particular, in cemeteries, where large volumes of organic materials are often stored, these pests can quickly multiply and spread infectious diseases, which poses a serious threat to human health.
Another aspect is the risk to the health of workers engaged in the operations of collecting, sorting, crushing and processing biodegradable waste. Improper handling of these wastes can lead to injury and illness, especially if workers do not have adequate protection or use outdated equipment. Exposure to toxic gases produced during the decomposition of organic materials can also cause respiratory diseases and exacerbation of chronic diseases.
Finally, it is worth mentioning the possibility of fires that may occur due to spontaneous combustion of biodegradable waste. This especially applies to large landfills, where the conditions for the decomposition of organic materials can contribute to an increase in temperature and the occurrence of a fire. Such incidents can cause significant damage to both the environment and the health of people living nearby.
Ways to reduce harm
In order to reduce the damage caused by biodegradable waste, it is necessary to implement effective methods of ecological management of biodegradable waste. One of these methods is composting, which allows you to turn organic waste into a valuable resource - fertilizer. Composting can be carried out both at the individual level and at industrial enterprises specializing in the processing of organic waste.
It is also important to implement separate collection of biodegradable waste, which will reduce the amount of mixed waste and facilitate the process of recycling it. To do this, it is necessary to provide appropriate information to the population about the importance of separate collection and provide access to containers for organic waste.
Transportation of biodegradable waste must be carried out in compliance with all environmental norms and standards, which will reduce the risks of environmental pollution. For this, you can use specialized vehicles that ensure safe transportation of organic materials.
Another important step is the creation of specialized enterprises for processing garden, park and cemetery waste. Such enterprises can carry out operations of collection, sorting, crushing and processing (D13) of biodegradable waste, which will minimize their impact on the environment and human health. For example, you can create specialized composting facilities or factories for processing organic materials.
Finally, it is important to ensure proper control over the management of biodegradable waste, including regular inspections of enterprises and organizations engaged in the processing of such waste. This will allow early detection of violations and prevention of possible environmental and social consequences.
