Polymer materials

20 01 39 Plastic

whyneed

Plastic is an integral part of modern life, used in many areas from household to industry. However, when plastic products complete their life cycle, they become a significant source of waste that has harmful effects on the environment and human health. Household waste, which includes waste from households, commercial organizations, industrial enterprises and institutions, makes up a significant share of the total volume of waste. Among them, plastic is one of the most problematic fractions, because its difficulty in processing and long decomposition time cause serious environmental problems.

The problem of plastic recycling, which is formed as a result of the activities of households and commercial organizations, becomes more acute every year. A large number of plastic products used in everyday life turn into waste after use. This includes plastic bags, bottles, food packaging, containers, disposable tableware and more. As a result of excessive consumption and improper waste management, a large part of plastic ends up in landfills, where it can be stored for hundreds of years, polluting the soil, water and air.

One of the main problems is that plastic consists of polymers that are very difficult to decompose. Even under the influence of natural factors such as sun and rain, it remains in the environment for a long time, gradually disintegrating into microplastics that can enter the food chain and negatively affect living organisms. In addition, the insufficient level of environmental awareness of the population, as well as the lack of proper infrastructure for the collection and processing of plastic waste only worsens the situation.

Especially dangerous is waste containing plastic, which originates from the infrastructure of settlements. They include different types of plastics used in construction, road repair, furniture making and other fields. These wastes often contain harmful impurities, such as heavy metals or chemical compounds, which increase the risk of environmental pollution. Services for waste management, collection and processing: Plastics Code NPV 20 01 39.

Plastic. Code according to the National List of Waste 20 01 39. Operations according to Appendices 1, 2 to the Law of Ukraine "On Waste Management" R5, D5.

A pity for the environment and people

howutilize

Plastic is one of the most common causes of environmental pollution. Plastic waste poses a serious threat to ecosystems, as it can remain in nature for a long time, disintegrating into smaller particles. This process of decomposition leads to the formation of microplastics, which are even more dangerous because of their ability to penetrate the soil, water and even the atmosphere.

Soil pollution with plastic waste disrupts the balance of the ecosystem, reducing soil fertility and hindering plant growth. Plastic waste can also contain toxic substances, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which can leach into the soil and enter groundwater. This leads to the pollution of water resources, which is a source of drinking water for many regions.

It is important to note that plastic waste that enters water bodies poses a particular threat to aquatic ecosystems. They can lead to the death of marine life, which perceive plastic as food. Fish, birds and other animals can suffocate or be injured by ingesting plastic particles. In addition, microplastics, which are formed as a result of the decomposition of plastic products, are able to penetrate into the bodies of animals, and then enter the human food chain.

Pity for people

Plastic waste poses a direct threat to human health. First of all, this concerns the negative impact of microplastics that enter the human body through water, food or air. Microplastics can accumulate in organs and tissues, causing inflammatory processes, metabolic disorders and other serious diseases. In addition, plastic products, especially those containing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and other toxic substances, can cause poisoning, allergic reactions and other negative health effects.

In particular, it is worth noting that plastic waste that is not properly managed can contribute to the spread of dangerous microorganisms such as pathogenic bacteria and viruses. They can settle on the surface of plastic products, maintaining their viability for a long time. This creates a risk of infection for people when they come into contact with the waste, as well as when they consume contaminated food or water.

Damage to human health can also occur through the secondary effects of plastic waste. In particular, the incineration of plastics in landfills, which is used as a waste reduction method, releases harmful substances such as dioxins and furans. These substances are highly toxic and can cause cancer, hormonal imbalance, problems with the reproductive system and other serious diseases.

Ways to reduce harm

whyneed

Reducing the damage caused by plastic waste to the environment and human health is one of the main challenges of modern society. For this, it is necessary to implement complex measures aimed at the ecological management of plastic waste, including operations for collecting, sorting, crushing and processing plastic waste.

One of the main ways to reduce the harm caused by plastic waste is to improve the system of its collection and sorting. This makes it possible to separate plastic waste from other fractions, which greatly facilitates their further processing (R5). In addition, the development of plastic recycling technologies is important, which allows it to be used as a raw material for the production of new products.

No less important is the introduction of methods of ecological management of plastic waste, which allow to reduce their quantity and negative impact on the environment. Such methods include the use of biodegradable materials that decompose under the influence of natural factors, as well as the introduction of programs for the reuse of plastic products. In particular, it is worth popularizing the practice of using reusable bags, containers (D5) and other products that can replace disposable plastic products.

Transportation of plastic waste is also an important element in reducing the damage caused by it. Correct transportation of waste helps to reduce the risks of its distribution and environmental pollution. For this, it is necessary to use specialized means of transport and observe safety rules when transporting them.
