Hazardous Waste Management in Odessa

Hazardous waste management in Odessa is one of the priority tasks of the city's environmental policy. Given the developed industry, large seaport and active transport system, the city is faced with a large volume of toxic waste that requires control and proper treatment.

Hazardous waste management includes its collection, sorting and transfer to specialized enterprises. Odesa has several collection points for used batteries, fluorescent lamps and medical products. However, a significant part of toxic materials still ends up in general landfills, which creates environmental threats.

Environmental maintenance of enterprises plays an important role in preventing environmental pollution. The main polluters are oil refineries, shipping companies and industrial companies. In 2023, 12 environmental inspections were carried out, as a result of which violations of safety standards in the field of handling hazardous materials were identified.

Hazardous waste is stored in the city at specially equipped facilities. However, the available capacities do not meet modern requirements, which may cause environmental risks. Chemicals, industrial lubricants and medical waste, which can pollute soil and water resources, pose a particular threat.

Transportation of hazardous waste is carried out by specialized companies with appropriate licenses and certified vehicles. In 2023, more than 20 tons of toxic substances were transported from Odessa to enterprises engaged in their further processing. Compliance with safety standards during transportation prevents accidental leaks of hazardous materials.

Recycling of hazardous waste is one of the most effective ways to minimize environmental damage. Odesa does not have enough of its own recycling enterprises, so most of the toxic substances are sent to other regions of Ukraine. In 2023, more than 18 tons of batteries, electronic components and waste oil products were transferred for recycling.

The level of public awareness about the importance of proper handling of hazardous waste needs to be improved. Only 35% of Odessa residents are aware of the existence of special points for receiving toxic substances. To increase the level of environmental responsibility, 10 information campaigns were held in 2023, reaching over 50 thousand people.

Local authorities are actively working to improve the infrastructure for collecting and processing hazardous waste. In 2023, the city received 2 million hryvnias for the expansion of toxic materials reception points and modernization of landfills. It is planned to install new containers for collecting chemicals in public places.

Control over illegal dumping of hazardous waste is another important aspect of the work of city environmental services. In 2023, 7 cases of illegal dumping of toxic materials were recorded in the suburbs of Odessa. The authorities plan to strengthen environmental supervision, introduce a monitoring system, and increase fines for violators.

The use of modern technologies for the collection, transportation, storage, and processing of toxic materials will contribute to environmental safety and improve the quality of life of city residents.
