Aqueous waste with paints, varnishes and organic solvents and hazardous substances

Aqueous sludges containing paints, varnishes and organic solvents are one of the most urgent environmental problems of our time. They are formed in the process of production, processing and use of paint and varnish materials and have a complex chemical composition, including heavy metals, toxic organic compounds and other dangerous substances. This creates serious threats to the environment and people's health.

Aqueous sludges containing paints, varnishes and organic solvents accumulate in large quantities at industrial enterprises. Their storage and processing is a difficult task due to the high level of toxicity and potential danger to the environment. Such slurries include:

• heavy metals: lead, cadmium, mercury
• organic solvents: toluene, xylene, acetone
• organochlorine compounds: polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)
• other dangerous substances: phenols, phthalates

These components have the ability to bioaccumulate, that is, accumulation in organisms, which can lead to serious diseases. Improper handling of water sludge can lead to their entry into water bodies, soil and atmosphere, causing large-scale environmental disasters.

• development and implementation of processing technologies (D15): modern processing methods allow reducing the toxicity of sludge and extracting useful components from it
• improvement of collection and transportation systems: ensuring safe collection and transportation of aqueous sludge for further processing or disposal
• use of alternative materials: replacement of toxic components of paints and varnishes with less dangerous analogues
• regular monitoring and control: implementation of constant control over the state of the environment and people's health in the zones affected by water sludge
• training and informing the population: conducting information campaigns and training programs on safe handling of hazardous waste
