Activated carbon is widely used in various industries for the purification of gases, liquids and air. However, after performing its function, activated carbon becomes a spent and hazardous waste that needs proper management. The problem of disposal of spent activated carbon is extremely urgent due to the potential harm to the environment and human health.

Spent activated carbon, which is used in industry, water and air filtration, medical institutions and other industries, becomes a hazardous waste due to the presence of various pollutants in it. These pollutants can include heavy metals, organic compounds and other toxic substances that can cause significant damage to the environment and human health.

Modern industry actively uses activated carbon to remove pollutants from gases and liquids. After the end of its life cycle, spent activated carbon accumulates toxic substances that cannot be simply disposed of without appropriate treatment. For example, in the chemical industry, activated carbon is used to remove organic compounds that can be carcinogenic or mutagenic.

Another problem is the amount of spent activated carbon, which is constantly increasing due to the expansion of industrial and domestic applications of this material. For example, household filters for water and air also use activated carbon, which after the end of its service life requires appropriate management.

Incorrect handling of spent activated carbon can have serious consequences for the environment. Pollutants entering water bodies can cause mass death of fish and other aquatic organisms. Soil contamination with heavy metals can affect agricultural land, reduce yields and make products unsafe for consumption. Air pollution from improper burning or dumping can cause respiratory diseases in people who live near such facilities.

In order to avoid these problems, it is necessary to introduce effective methods of ecological management of hazardous waste of spent activated carbon (except those indicated under the code 06 07 02). This includes an integrated approach to the collection, sorting, crushing, processing and transportation of this waste. Effective management of hazardous waste will reduce the negative impact on the environment and human health, as well as contribute to the sustainable development of industry.

There are various methods of environmental management of hazardous spent activated carbon waste (except those specified under code 06 07 02) that can reduce the negative impact on the environment and human health. Among the main methods, one should highlight the collection, sorting, crushing and processing of hazardous waste, as well as their transportation to specialized facilities for further processing (D15).

Operations for the collection, sorting, crushing and processing of hazardous waste of spent activated carbon (except those specified under code 06 07 02) must be carried out in accordance with established environmental standards and safety requirements. This will reduce the risks of environmental pollution and reduce the negative impact on people's health.

• collection and sorting of waste
• shredding and processing of waste to reduce its volume
• transportation of hazardous waste to specialized institutions
• use of environmentally safe processing methods
