10 01 20* Sludges from wastewater treatment (cleaning) at the enterprise containing hazardous substances
The problem of environmental pollution with industrial production waste has remained relevant for many years. Sludges, which are formed during the treatment (cleaning) of sewage at enterprises and contain dangerous substances, require special attention. These wastes not only pollute the environment, but also pose a threat to human health.
Sludges from wastewater treatment at enterprises are complex mixtures of organic and inorganic substances. They are formed as a result of the treatment of industrial waters containing a variety of pollutants, including heavy metals, organic compounds and toxic chemicals. Waste may contain such dangerous substances as lead, cadmium, mercury and others. Improper handling of this waste can lead to serious environmental and health risks.
Methods of environmental management of hazardous waste sludge from the processing (cleaning) of effluents at the enterprise containing hazardous substances include collection, sorting, crushing and processing. However, despite the availability of modern technologies, a large number of enterprises do not comply with the established norms and rules, which complicates the situation.
A pity for the environment and people
Hazardous waste contained in sludge can cause significant damage to the environment. Heavy metals, such as lead, mercury, and cadmium, entering the soil, can accumulate in plants, and later in the organisms of animals and humans. This leads to bioaccumulation, which can have long-term negative consequences for ecosystems.
Water pollution is another serious consequence of improper sludge disposal. Toxic substances can enter groundwater and watercourses, reducing the quality of drinking water and posing a threat to aquatic organisms. In particular, such pollutants can cause the death of fish, change the composition of aquatic ecosystems and disrupt food chains.
The negative impact on the atmosphere is also an important aspect. Volatile organic compounds and other air pollutants may be released during sludge storage and processing. This leads to deterioration of air quality, which can affect people's health, causing respiratory diseases and other health problems.
- soil pollution: heavy metals can accumulate in plants and animal organisms
- pollution of water resources: toxic substances penetrate into groundwater and watercourses
- negative impact on the atmosphere: release of volatile organic compounds and other pollutants
Pity for people
Dangerous substances contained in sludge can cause serious diseases in people. Inhalation of dust containing heavy metals can lead to respiratory diseases such as asthma and bronchitis. Prolonged contact with such substances can cause the development of chronic diseases of the respiratory system.
Ingress of toxic substances into drinking water causes poisoning and chronic diseases of internal organs. For example, lead can cause kidney damage, nervous system damage, and cognitive impairment. Mercury can cause serious neurological disorders, and cadmium – problems with the bone system and kidneys.
Direct contact with waste can cause allergic reactions and other skin diseases. Workers who handle and store such waste are constantly at risk of various injuries and illnesses associated with exposure to hazardous chemicals.
- respiratory diseases: asthma, bronchitis, chronic diseases of the respiratory system
- poisoning with toxic substances: damage to the kidneys, nervous system, impaired cognitive functions
- allergic reactions and skin diseases: contact with hazardous waste
- neurological disorders: exposure to mercury
- problems with the bone system and kidneys: exposure to cadmium
Sludges from wastewater treatment (cleaning) at the enterprise containing hazardous substances. Code according to the National list of waste 10 01 20*. Operations in accordance with Annexes 1, 2 to the Law of Ukraine "On Waste Management" D15, D13.
Ways to reduce damage from sewage treatment
Management of hazardous waste sludge from the processing (cleaning) of effluents at the enterprise containing hazardous substances requires a comprehensive approach. First, it is important to introduce modern methods of wastewater treatment, which allow reducing the concentration of hazardous substances in waste. Secondly, it is necessary to implement waste collection and storage systems (D15) that prevent them from entering the environment.
Methods of ecological management of hazardous waste sludge also include operations of collection, sorting, crushing and processing of hazardous waste. An important role is played by the transportation of hazardous waste sludge from the processing (cleaning) of sewage at the enterprise containing hazardous substances. Enterprises must ensure safe transportation and disposal of waste in accordance with applicable norms and standards.
In addition, it is necessary to conduct regular monitoring and assessment of the impact of waste on the environment. This will allow timely detection and elimination of possible risks. An important aspect is also raising the awareness of enterprise employees regarding the proper handling of hazardous waste.
- implementation of modern sewage treatment methods;
- waste collection and storage systems;
- gathering, sorting, crushing and processing operations (D13);
- transportation of hazardous waste;
- regular monitoring and impact assessment;
- increasing employee awareness.
