Bottom sludge, or sediment and silt, is one of the most serious problems associated with water pollution. They are formed as a result of various natural and anthropogenic processes and have a significant impact on the environment and human health. In this article, we will consider the problem of bottom sludge, its impact on the environment and people, as well as possible ways to reduce the damage.
Bottom sludge occurs as a result of the accumulation of various substances at the bottom of reservoirs. These can be organic residues, industrial waste, microplastics, heavy metals and other dangerous substances. Such accumulation creates serious environmental problems, as these substances can enter the water, polluting it and creating danger for all living things.
The main causes of the formation of bottom sludges include:
- industrial effluents;

Among other negative consequences for the environment, it is worth noting:
- pollution of soils with heavy metals and other toxic substances, which reduces their fertility and can cause plant poisoning;
- disruption of the natural habitats of aquatic and terrestrial organisms, which can lead to the loss of biodiversity;
- deterioration of water quality, which negatively affects the health of people and animals;
- distribution of toxic substances through food chains, which can have long-term consequences for ecosystems.
Thus, bottom sludges pose a serious threat to the environment. To minimize their negative impact, it is necessary to implement effective methods of ecological management of hazardous waste from bottom sludge (sediment, sludge) at the bottom of reservoirs, to carry out regular monitoring of the state of water bodies and to take measures to prevent the formation of new pollution.

- crushing and processing of slurries to reduce their volume;
- transportation of hazardous waste to places of processing or storage (R13).
