01 03 04* Hazardous waste management of acid tailings from sulfur ore processing
The problem of pollution of natural resources due to acid tailings, which are a by-product of the processing of sulfur ores, requires attention in view of the ecological context. A large amount of this hazardous waste poses a significant threat to the environment and the health of the population of Ukraine and neighboring countries. Elucidating the mechanisms of formation of acid tailings, determining their chemical properties, and finding effective methods of treatment and removal from circulation are key to reducing their impact on the ecosystem as a whole.
Acid tails – it is an industrial waste from the development of sulfur ores, where strong acids, such as sulfuric or hydrochloric, are used to extract useful metals. The residues formed after the extraction of metals contain high concentrations of sulfates, in addition, diluted metals and toxic elements in high concentration. The composition of acid tailings may vary depending on the characteristics of the ores used and their processing methods.
Chemical composition of acid tailings
Acid tailings can contain a variety of harmful chemicals. Let's consider the main ones.
Acid tails include:
- Toxic heavy metals, such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and many others, which have a negative impact on soils, air, and people's lives and health.
- Sulfates and other salts that can lead to water pollution, which in turn cause poisoning of aquatic living organisms.
- Radioactive elements that are contained in some ores and pose a potential danger to living organisms.
- Acid components affecting the pH level of the environment and water in particular.
Environmental consequences
- Soil pollution — acid tailings can significantly disrupt the natural chemical balance of soils, and as a result, make their agricultural use impossible for several decades or even centuries.
- Pollution of water bodies — chemicals included in chemical tailings can enter surface and groundwater, which leads to contamination of drinking water and poisoning of water resources, destroying ecosystems and making water bodies unfit for life. The use of water for irrigation of agricultural crops from such reservoirs is dangerous.
- Impact on human health — toxic components of acid tailings can accumulate in the human body and cause chronic diseases and poisoning when they enter the food chain. This, in turn, leads to an additional burden on the health care system in our country.
Methods of environmental management of hazardous waste acid tailings from sulfur ore processing
- Neutralization (D9) involves the addition of alkaline substances, such as lime, to eliminate excess acidity and reduce harmful environmental impacts. In this way, acidity is minimized and the pH indicator is stabilized.
- Storage (D5) involves the isolation of waste in specially designated storage facilities or tericonos in order to avoid their penetration into soils and water sources, thereby protecting the environment from the effects of acid tailings.
- Recycling (R5) uses procedures for purification and extraction of useful components, enabling the cyclical use of these resources through techniques such as flotation and other methods of ecological management of hazardous waste acid tailings from sulfuric acid processing.

Innovative treatment of hazardous acid tailings waste
Acid tailings from sulfur ore processing. Code according to the National list of waste 01 03 04*. Operations in accordance with Annexes 1, 2 to the Law of Ukraine "On Waste Management" D9, D5, D8, R3, R5.
Bioremediation (D8). The application of advanced technologies that improves cleaning with the help of living organisms, in particular, such as bacteria, which can process the components contained in acid tailings.
Use in construction. This makes it possible to use acid tailings as raw materials in the production of construction materials (R3), which in the future will contribute to reducing the cost of their removal and recovery, as well as reducing the amount of waste.
As of now, the problem of acid tailings from the processing of sulfur ores in Ukraine is complex. Thanks to the joint efforts of the State and business, it can be solved with the help of modern technologies and innovative approaches.
