06 01 04* Phosphoric and phosphorous acids
Phosphoric and phosphorous acids are important chemical compounds that are widely used in various industries. They are used in the production of fertilizers, cleaning agents, as well as in the processes of metal processing and the synthesis of other chemical substances. However, despite their usefulness, these acids pose a significant danger to the environment and human health.
Phosphoric acid (H3PO4) and phosphorous acid (H3PO3 sub>) are highly corrosive substances. Their production, storage, transportation and use creates a number of environmental problems. The release of these acids into the environment can lead to serious consequences, including contamination of water resources, soils and atmospheric air.
The main problems associated with phosphoric and phosphorous acids are:
- hazardous waste generated during the production and use of these acids.
- high level of toxicity for living organisms.
- corrosive effect on equipment and infrastructure.
Harm for the environment
Emissions of phosphoric and phosphorous acid into the environment can have serious consequences. First of all, this is the pollution of water resources. Phosphorus compounds, entering water bodies, contribute to the process of eutrophication – excessive enrichment of water with nutrients, which leads to massive reproduction of algae and a decrease in oxygen in the water. This, in turn, causes the death of fish and other aquatic organisms.
Soils contaminated with phosphoric acids lose their fertility, as these substances suppress the development of beneficial microorganisms and deteriorate the soil structure. In addition, phosphoric acids can pollute the atmosphere, leading to acid rain and poor air quality.
Danger to human health and ways to reduce harm
Pity for people
Contact with phosphoric and phosphoric acids can have serious consequences for human health. Getting these substances on the skin causes severe burns, and inhalation of their vapors can cause damage to the respiratory tract. Chronic exposure to small concentrations of these acids can cause diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, kidneys and nervous system.
The effect of phosphoric acids on children and pregnant women is especially dangerous, as it can lead to birth defects and other serious disorders in the development of the fetus.
Ways of harm reduction
Reduction of damage from phosphoric and phosphorous acids requires the implementation of comprehensive environmental management measures. One of these methods is hazardous waste management, which includes operations for the collection, sorting, crushing and processing of hazardous waste from these acids.
The main damage reduction methods are:
- implementation of modern waste water and gas emission treatment technologies;
- application of closed production cycles, where waste is reused;
- improving conditions for storage and transportation of dangerous substances;
- training of personnel in safe methods of working with chemicals.
Phosphoric and phosphorous acids. Code according to the National list of waste 06 01 04*. Operations in accordance with Annexes 1, 2 to the Law of Ukraine "On Waste Management" R13, D10, D15. Code according to Annexes VIII, IX to the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Utilization/Removal A4090 (AD110, AB110)
Methods of environmental management
Environmental management of hazardous phosphoric and phosphoric acid waste includes several basic methods aimed at minimizing their negative impact on the environment and human health.
Methods of environmental management of hazardous waste from phosphoric and phosphoric acid include:
- Waste collection: waste containing phosphoric and phosphoric acids must be collected in specially designed containers that ensure tightness and prevent acid leakage.
- Sorting of waste (D15): waste must be sorted by type and degree of danger, which allows to optimize further processes of their treatment.
- Crushing and processing: waste can be subject to crushing to reduce its volume and facilitate further processing. Treatment includes chemical and physical methods of acid neutralization.
- Transportation: hazardous waste must be transported by specialized vehicles that ensure safety during transportation. This includes the use of tanks and containers that meet safety requirements.
- Disposal of residues (D10): after treatment and neutralization, residual waste must be safely disposed of or reused in production processes that meet environmental standards.
