06 03 11* Solid salts and solutions containing cyanides
Cyanide compounds are among the most dangerous substances that can be found in industrial waste. Cyanides – are salts or solutions that contain the cyanide anion (CN-). They are widely used in electroplating, gold mining, the production of chemical products, and even in the pharmaceutical industry. However, due to their high toxicity, cyanides can pose a serious threat to the environment and human health if they are not properly stored and handled.
The main problem associated with cyanide compounds is their high toxicity and ability to quickly penetrate the environment. Cyanides can cause serious poisoning when ingested by humans or animals, even in small amounts. They can enter water, soil and air, causing pollution that is difficult to control.
Methods of environmental management of hazardous waste solid salts and solutions containing cyanides include various approaches to their collection, treatment and neutralization. Without proper measures, these compounds can lead to irreversible environmental and health consequences.
A pity for the environment and people
Cyanides are extremely dangerous for the environment due to their high solubility in water and ability to bioaccumulate. They can cause significant pollution of water resources, which leads to the death of aquatic organisms. In addition, cyanides can penetrate the soil, making it unsuitable for agricultural use.
The main environmental problems caused by cyanides:
- pollution of water resources
- destruction of biodiversity
- decrease in soil fertility
- risk of food contamination
Harm to people from cyanide salts and solutions
Cyanides are one of the most dangerous chemical compounds for humans. They can cause acute and chronic poisoning, causing serious health problems. Symptoms of acute cyanide poisoning include suffocation, dizziness, weakness, nausea, convulsions, and loss of consciousness. In severe cases, poisoning can lead to death.
Acute poisoning
Acute cyanide poisoning can occur by inhaling vapors or dust, getting the substance on the skin, or swallowing it. Symptoms of acute poisoning appear quickly and include:
- severe suffocation and difficulty breathing
- dizziness and loss of balance
- weakness and loss of consciousness
- convulsions
- nausea and vomiting
In case of significant contact with cyanides, death can occur within minutes due to respiratory and cardiac arrest.
Chronic poisoning
Long-term contact with small doses of cyanide can cause chronic diseases, including damage to the central nervous system, liver and kidneys. Chronic poisoning can develop with long-term exposure to low concentrations of cyanides in air or water.
Symptoms of chronic poisoning include:
- constant headache
- decrease in appetite
- weakness and fatigue
- depression and irritability
- breathing problems
It is also possible to damage the thyroid gland and other endocrine organs, which can lead to serious metabolic disorders.
Effect on various organs
Cyanides can affect various organs and body systems. The most vulnerable are:
- respiratory system: inhalation of cyanides can lead to pulmonary edema and acute respiratory distress syndrome.
- cardiovascular system: cyanides can cause arrhythmias and heart failure.
- central nervous system: exposure to cyanides can lead to coma and irreversible brain damage.
- liver and kidneys: these organs are responsible for detoxifying the body and can be seriously damaged by chronic exposure to cyanides.
Ways to reduce harm
In order to reduce the harm from cyanide compounds, it is necessary to implement comprehensive measures for the environmental management of hazardous waste. This includes the proper collection, sorting, treatment and transportation of cyanide-containing waste.
Solid salts and solutions containing cyanides. Code according to the National list of waste 06 03 11*. Operations in accordance with Annexes 1, 2 to the Law of Ukraine "On Waste Management" D15, R12.
Basic damage reduction techniques include:
- use of chemical neutralizers to reduce toxicity
- development of safe methods of storage and transportation of waste (D15)
- implementation of recycling technologies (R12)
- increasing control over compliance with environmental standards at production facilities
