Lubricant-coolant fluids (MOFs) are an important component of metal machining. They are used to reduce friction, cool tools and parts, and remove metal particles. However, traditional MORs often contain halogens, which can be dangerous for the environment and human health. Growing awareness of environmental and health risks is forcing manufacturers to look for halogen-free alternatives.
Halogen-free mineral MOPs have become popular due to their environmental safety. They provide cooling and lubrication efficiency without harming the environment. However, even these MPAs can create problems if their waste is not properly managed. Methods of ecological management of hazardous wastes of mineral-based lubricants and coolants for machine processing, which do not contain halogens (except for emulsions and solutions), are important for reducing their negative impact.
A pity for the environment and people
Waste lubricating and cooling liquids can significantly harm the environment. Even without halogens, they can contain toxic substances, heavy metals and other harmful components. Uncontrolled discharge of such waste into the soil or water can lead to pollution of water sources, soils and cause the death of flora and fauna.
An important part of environmental management is the collection, sorting, crushing and processing of hazardous waste of mineral-based engine coolants that do not contain halogens (except for emulsions and solutions). This allows you to reduce risks to the environment and ensure safe recycling or reuse of resources (R13).
Pity for people
The impact of lubricating and cooling fluids (LFCs) on human health is an important issue that cannot be ignored. Workers in constant contact with MOR can be exposed to harmful effects through various routes: inhalation of vapors, skin contact with liquids, and accidental ingestion of contaminated particles. Even without halogens, some components of MOR can be toxic and cause various diseases.
Prolonged contact with the skin can cause dermatitis and other skin diseases. MOPs containing mineral oils and other additives can be irritating, cause skin dryness, cracks and inflammation. In some cases, especially in the presence of allergic reactions, it can lead to serious chronic conditions.
Inhalation of coolant vapors can cause respiratory problems. Workers who work in poorly ventilated rooms are at risk of developing diseases such as asthma, bronchitis and other chronic diseases of the respiratory system. Toxic fumes can also affect the nervous system, causing headaches, dizziness and fatigue.
One of the most serious risks is the accidental ingestion of MOR or its contaminated particles. This can happen due to neglect of hygiene rules or careless attitude to safety. In such cases, acute poisoning is possible, requiring immediate medical assistance. Toxic substances can affect the gastrointestinal tract, causing nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and other symptoms of poisoning.
It is important to implement proper security measures to prevent such risks. Hazardous waste management of mineral-based machining coolants that do not contain halogens (except emulsions and solutions) includes:
- mandatory use of personal protective equipment, such as gloves, masks and special clothing;
- regular briefings and training for employees on the safe handling of hazardous waste;
- organization of proper ventilation of workplaces to reduce the concentration of toxic vapors in the air;
- conducting regular medical examinations for early detection and treatment of occupational diseases.
The application of these measures helps to minimize the harmful effects of PES on the health of workers, ensuring safe working conditions and preserving their health.
Reducing the negative impact of lubricating and cooling fluids on the environment and human health
In order to reduce the negative impact of lubricating and cooling fluids on the environment and human health, it is important to implement various measures. The main ways are:
- use of safe alternative fluids that do not contain halogens;
- implementation of effective waste collection and treatment methods (R9);
- ensuring proper transportation of hazardous waste of mineral-based lubricating and cooling fluids for machine processing that do not contain halogens (except for emulsions and solutions);
- increasing the level of awareness and training of workers regarding the safe handling of hazardous materials.
Environmental management of hazardous waste of mineral-based, halogen-free machining coolants (except emulsions and solutions) also includes the use of modern technologies for waste minimization and reuse.
