04 02 14* Waste from product preparation and final processing containing organic solvents
Dyes and pigments are widely used in various industries, including textile, pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic industries. However, many of these materials contain dangerous substances that can harm the environment and human health.
Dangerous dyes and pigments often contain heavy metals, organic solvents and other toxic compounds. These substances can enter the water, soil and atmosphere, causing significant environmental damage. The main problems include:
- pollution of water resources with heavy metals, such as cadmium, lead, mercury;
- soil pollution, which leads to a decrease in fertility and loss of biodiversity;
- emissions of toxic substances into the atmosphere during the production and disposal of dyes.
The textile industry uses a variety of dyes and pigments, some of which may contain hazardous substances. Here are some of them:
- Aniline dyes. Aniline: toxic by inhalation, ingestion and skin contact. Causes eye and skin irritation, and also affects the central nervous system. Azo dyes: can break down into aromatic amines, some of which are carcinogens.
- Reactive dyes. Chromium: used to improve color fastness, but chromium (VI) compounds are toxic and carcinogenic. Formaldehyde: can be used as a fixative, but it is toxic and carcinogenic.
- Metallic dyes. Cadmium: Used in some dyes to give bright colors, especially yellows, reds, and oranges. Cadmium is very toxic and carcinogenic. Lead: used in some pigments and dyes, especially for coloring synthetic materials. Lead is toxic and affects the nervous system, kidneys and other organs.
- Disperse dyes. Pentachlorophenol: Can be used as a fungicide and antifungal agent in textile dyes. Toxic and potentially carcinogenic. Phthalates: Used to add flexibility and strength to dyes and coatings. Phthalates are endocrine disruptors and can affect the reproductive system.
- Other dangerous substances. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA): used to impart water-repellent properties to textiles. Toxic and persistent in the environment.Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPE): used as emulsifiers in textile dyes. Toxic for aquatic organisms and can affect the hormonal system.
Damage to dyes and pigments containing hazardous substances
Dye and pigments containing dangerous substances. Code according to the National list of waste 04 02 16*. Operations in accordance with Annexes 1, 2 to the Law of Ukraine “On Waste Management” D10, D15. Code in accordance with Annexes VIII, IX to the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Utilization/Removal А4070 (AD070)
Colors and pigments containing hazardous substances can cause serious problems for the environment. For example:
- heavy metals, entering aquatic ecosystems, accumulate in the organisms of fish and other aquatic animals, which can lead to biomagnification and disruption of food chains;
- pollution of soils with heavy metals can lead to a decrease in the yield of agricultural crops and affect the health of animals that consume these crops;
- organic solvents used in the production of dyes can evaporate into the air, causing atmospheric pollution and the formation of photochemical smog.
Pity for people
Colors and pigments containing hazardous substances can harm the health of people who come into contact with them directly or indirectly:
- heavy metals can accumulate in the human body, causing toxic effects such as kidney, liver and nervous system dysfunction;
- organic solvents can cause skin, eye and respiratory irritation, as well as chronic diseases with long-term exposure;
- allergic reactions and dermatitis may occur in workers who come into contact with dyes and pigments during production.
Reduction of harm from hazardous dyes and pigments
Reducing harm from hazardous dyes and pigments requires the implementation of effective environmental management methods. The main approaches include:
- implementation of wastewater treatment technologies from heavy metals and other toxic substances;
- development and use of safer alternative dyes and pigments based on natural components (R7);
- strengthening control over the production and transportation of hazardous substances, including operations for the collection, sorting, crushing and processing of hazardous waste from dyes and pigments (R12);
- increasing employee awareness of risks and safety measures when working with dangerous dyes and pigments (D15).
