17 04 05 Cast iron and steel
Construction and demolition waste is one of the biggest environmental problems of today. Among them, a special place is occupied by waste iron and steel, which are formed in the process of dismantling buildings and infrastructure facilities, as well as during the reconstruction and repair of structures. These materials are, on the one hand, extremely valuable because they can be reused after appropriate processing. On the other hand, improper management of such waste can lead to significant environmental pollution and negative impact on human health.
One of the main problems associated with iron and steel waste is their massive accumulation in landfills. Due to their large volume and weight, these materials occupy a significant area, which creates a burden on natural resources. In addition, this waste can contain various impurities, such as oils, paints, insulating materials, which during decomposition can release harmful substances into the soil and groundwater.
Another significant problem is the difficulty in sorting and processing this waste. Reinforced concrete structures, in which cast iron and steel are often present, require special equipment to separate metal components from other materials. In addition, such operations require significant energy expenditure, which further increases the environmental footprint of these processes. Services for waste management, collection and processing: Cast iron and steel NPV code 17 04 05.
Cast iron and steel. Code according to the National List of Waste 17 04 05. Operations according to Appendices 1, 2 to the Law of Ukraine "On Waste Management" D13, R7, R5.
A pity for the environment and people
Waste iron and steel, which are not subject to proper environmental management, can cause significant damage to the environment. They occupy large areas of land, which leads to soil degradation and loss of biodiversity. In addition, in the process of their decomposition, harmful substances can be released that pollute the air, water and soil.
The main environmental problems arising from improper management of iron and steel waste are:
- pollution of groundwater with harmful substances, such as oils and chemical compounds contained in metal impurities;
- release of toxic substances in the process of corrosion of metals that enter the air and soil;
- excessive use of natural resources for the production of new metals, which increases the environmental footprint;
- destruction of natural landscapes due to the creation of large metal waste dumps.
The problem of water pollution is one of the most acute, as heavy metals and chemical impurities contained in waste can penetrate into aquifers. This leads to the deterioration of the quality of drinking water and the emergence of a threat to water resource ecosystems.
Pity for people
The negative impact of iron and steel waste on human health is associated with a number of factors. First, it is the release of harmful substances in the process of corrosion of metals that enter the air. Breathing in such substances can cause diseases of the respiratory system, allergic reactions and even cancer.
Secondly, soil and water pollution can lead to the accumulation of heavy metals in food consumed by humans. This, in turn, can cause poisoning, dysfunction of internal organs and other serious diseases.
Among the main risks to human health associated with iron and steel waste, we can highlight:
- diseases of the respiratory system due to inhalation of toxic substances released in the process of corrosion of metals;
- poisoning by heavy metals entering food and water due to soil pollution;
- risk of developing cancer due to prolonged contact with toxic substances;
- disruption of the functioning of the nervous and immune systems due to the accumulation of harmful substances in the body.
Children, the elderly and people with weakened immunity are especially vulnerable to the effects of these harmful factors. Therefore, it is important to ensure effective environmental management of iron and steel waste in order to minimize their negative impact on human health.
Ways to reduce harm
Reduction of damage from iron and steel waste is possible due to the introduction of modern methods of ecological waste management. This includes operations for collecting, sorting, crushing and processing (D13) iron and steel waste, which allow to reduce their negative impact on the environment and human health.
Among the main measures that can be applied to reduce damage, we can highlight:
- application of methods of ecological management of iron and steel waste, including their processing and reuse (R5, R7);
- organization of proper transportation of iron and steel waste to prevent their dispersion and environmental pollution;
- implementation of a system of monitoring and control over the state of metal waste landfills, which allows timely detection and elimination of potential threats.
An important element of waste management is its sorting and processing at the point of generation, which allows to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills and ensure its re-processing.
A significant role in reducing the harm from iron and steel waste is played by companies specializing in the ecological management of such waste. One of the leading companies in this field is "UtilVtorProm", which provides a full range of waste management services, starting from their collection and sorting, and ending with processing and reuse of materials.
Thus, effective environmental management of iron and steel waste is a key element in preserving the environment and ensuring human safety. This requires the coordinated work of state bodies, enterprises and the public, as well as the introduction of modern technologies for the processing of metal waste.
