20 03 03 Debris from street cleaning
Street cleaning debris is one of the most common types of waste generated in settlements. This is the result of daily cleaning of streets, sidewalks and other open areas where dust, sand, gravel, leaves, branches and other small waste accumulate. The problem with this type of waste is not only the volume, but also the composition, which often contains harmful substances such as heavy metals, chemical residues and microplastics. These substances can have a negative impact on the environment and human health, if proper environmental management of street cleaning waste is not carried out.
Street cleaning debris includes a wide range of materials that end up on the streets as a result of various activities. Often this waste is mixed with natural elements such as leaves and branches, but also contains significant amounts of anthropogenic materials, including plastic bottles, plastic bags, construction dust and road surface chemicals. This mixed nature of litter makes it difficult to recycle and manage properly, as different components need to be separated for further processing.
The main sources of debris include vehicular traffic, construction site activity, agriculture and other anthropogenic processes. These sources enrich litter with heavy metals such as lead and zinc, as well as chemicals from pesticides and herbicides. The accumulation of such materials on the streets creates a complex environmental challenge, because these elements can wash into the soil and water resources, polluting them. Waste management, collection and processing services: Street cleaning debris Code NPV 20 03 03.
Debris from street cleaning. Code according to the National List of Waste 20 03 03. Operations according to Appendices 1, 2 to the Law of Ukraine "On Waste Management" D13, R5, D10.
A pity for the environment and people
Sweep waste from street cleaning has a significant negative impact on the environment. One of the most acute aspects of this impact is soil and water pollution. During rains and melting snow, debris is washed off street surfaces and enters drainage systems, and then into rivers, lakes and other water bodies. Chemical substances contained in litter, in particular heavy metals, can accumulate in soils and aquatic ecosystems, leading to their degradation.
Microplastics, which are part of litter, also pose a serious threat to the environment. It accumulates in water bodies and is absorbed by aquatic organisms, which can lead to the destruction of food chains and the death of fish and other aquatic inhabitants. It also poses a threat to human health, as microplastics can enter the body through the food chain.
Pity for people
Harmful substances contained in street cleaning debris can cause significant harm to people's health. Inhalation of dust rising from the streets during cleaning can cause respiratory diseases, including bronchitis, asthma and other chronic lung diseases. Children, the elderly and people with weakened immunity are especially vulnerable to such diseases.
In addition, heavy metals, which are often found in litter, can enter drinking water and food, posing a health hazard to people. The accumulation of such substances in the body can lead to chronic diseases, including lead poisoning, kidney and central nervous system dysfunction. Therefore, it is important to apply proper methods of ecological management of street cleaning waste to prevent their harmful effects on people's health.
Ways to reduce harm
In order to reduce the negative impact of garbage on the environment and human health, it is necessary to implement effective methods of managing garbage from street cleaning. Operations for collection, sorting, crushing and processing (D13) of street cleaning waste must be carried out in accordance with environmental safety standards. This includes the use of specialized technical means for cleaning and transportation of debris, which minimize dust generation and prevent the spread of pollutants into the environment.
It is also important to implement systems of separate collection and sorting of garbage at the stage of its collection. This allows hazardous components such as heavy metals and microplastics to be isolated for further safe recycling (R5) or disposal (D10). Environmental management of street cleaning waste also involves informing the public about the importance of proper disposal of household waste and preventing it from reaching the streets.
It is equally important to create conditions for efficient transportation of street cleaning waste to specialized landfills or processing plants, where they can be processed with minimal negative impact on the environment. This contributes to reducing the risks of pollution of natural resources and preserving the ecological balance.
