Hazardous Waste Management in Kherson

Hazardous waste management in Kherson is an important task for maintaining the ecological safety of the region. As a large industrial and port center, the city generates significant amounts of hazardous waste originating from industrial enterprises, medical institutions, transport and the household sector. Insufficiently developed infrastructure for handling toxic substances can lead to serious environmental consequences, including pollution of the Dnieper River and the Black Sea.

Hazardous waste management involves their collection, sorting, temporary storage and further processing. Kherson has several specialized collection points that accept batteries, accumulators, fluorescent lamps and chemicals. However, the number of such points is insufficient, which contributes to the entry of hazardous materials into the general waste stream.

Environmental maintenance of enterprises plays an important role in reducing the harmful impact of industrial waste on the environment. Kherson is home to over 200 large enterprises that generate significant amounts of toxic substances, including used lubricants, chemical reagents, and petroleum product residues. Regular environmental inspections reveal violations in the field of hazardous materials management, which requires the implementation of new environmental standards at the enterprise level.

Hazardous waste is stored in the city at specialized landfills and storage facilities, but their capacity is already approaching a critical limit. The problem of accumulation of medical waste, which can cause the spread of dangerous infections, is particularly acute. To solve this problem, local authorities are considering the possibility of creating additional facilities for storing toxic materials.

Transportation of hazardous waste is carried out according to strict environmental standards, which require the use of certified vehicles with sealed containers. In 2023, over 100 official transportations of hazardous substances were carried out from Kherson to specialized enterprises in Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Odessa regions. At the same time, cases of illegal transportation of hazardous waste are recorded, which requires increased state control.

Recycling of hazardous waste in Kherson is a key area of the city's environmental policy. There are several enterprises in the region that recycle batteries, chemical reagents, and electronic waste. In 2023, more than 50 tons of hazardous materials were transferred for recycling, which significantly reduced the burden on the region's ecosystem. However, the city needs to expand its own recycling infrastructure to process more toxic waste.

Public awareness work on hazardous waste is an important component of the city's environmental policy. In 2023, more than 30 educational events were held in Kherson aimed at raising citizens' awareness of environmental problems. However, surveys show that only 45% of city residents know where to drop off hazardous waste, which indicates the need to expand information campaigns.

Local authorities are actively cooperating with environmental organizations and international partners to improve the hazardous waste management system. In 2023, Kherson received funding in the amount of 3 million hryvnias for the implementation of new technologies for the collection and processing of hazardous substances. In the coming years, it is planned to create mobile collection points, which will increase the efficiency of environmental control.

Preventing illegal handling of hazardous waste remains an important task. During 2023, more than 20 cases of illegal discharge of toxic materials were recorded in the city, which indicates the need to strengthen control and increase fines for violations of environmental legislation. It is planned to create an electronic system for accounting for hazardous waste, which will allow controlling their origin and movement.

Thanks to an integrated approach to hazardous waste management, Kherson is gradually improving the environmental situation. The introduction of modern recycling technologies, expansion of the collection and transportation system for hazardous materials contributes to reducing the level of environmental pollution. However, to achieve sustainable results, it is necessary to expand the environmental infrastructure, increase the responsibility of enterprises, and strengthen control over compliance with environmental standards.

It's easy to make a mistake in choosing a partner. It’s not easy to make a choice, but we settled on this company; they have a license to dispose of many types of waste. One of the few companies that has waste disposal permits. We recommend that you contact us only here regarding recycling issues.
