17 02 02 Glass
Glass waste generated as a result of construction and demolition of buildings is one of the most urgent environmental problems of our time. The huge volumes of glass used in the construction industry lead to the accumulation of a significant amount of waste after the completion of construction work or during the demolition of old buildings. This waste often ends up in landfills, which causes a significant burden on the environment. Since glass is a material that decomposes over a long period of time, its uncontrolled storage in landfills can have a long-term negative impact on the environment and human health.
Glass has a wide range of applications in construction, from window panes to building facades, and is an important material for modern architecture. However, after the end of a building's operation or its partial demolition, glass elements often become waste that must be properly treated. Improper management of these wastes can lead to soil and water pollution, as well as to the formation of dangerous dioxins and other harmful substances.
During the demolition of buildings, there is also a need to remove soil that was contaminated during the operation of the building or as a result of its destruction. Such soil contains not only shards of glass, but also other pollutants that can cause serious environmental problems if not properly disposed of. Glass waste management is an important aspect of environmental management that requires attention and responsible decisions at the level of public and private organizations. Services for waste management, collection and processing: Glass Code NPV 17 02 02.
Glass. Code according to the National List of Waste 17 02 02. Operations according to Appendices 1, 2 to the Law of Ukraine "On Waste Management" D13, R7.
A pity for the environment and people
Glass waste left after the construction or demolition of buildings can cause significant damage to the environment. Glass is a durable material that is practically non-biodegradable. This means it can remain in the environment for decades, if not centuries, accumulating in landfills or even ending up in bodies of water and oceans.
One of the most serious aspects of environmental damage caused by waste glass is its impact on soil and water resources. Glass entering the soil can lead to soil contamination and degradation, especially if the glass waste contains residues of chemicals, paints or other contaminants. In addition, improperly stored glass waste can form small fragments that are potentially dangerous for animals and plants.
Water resources are also at risk from glass waste. Glass waste can end up in rivers, lakes or oceans, where it breaks down into microscopic particles. These particles can enter the food chain of aquatic ecosystems, posing a threat to fish, birds and other animal species, as well as to humans who consume these fish.
Glass waste management requires the implementation of effective ecological methods that will minimize their negative impact on the environment. Methods of ecological management of glass waste include operations of collection, sorting, crushing and processing of glass waste, which allows you to recycle them into new materials or ensure safe storage.
Pity for people
The impact of glass waste on human health is another important aspect that needs attention. People can be harmed through direct contact with glass waste or indirectly through exposure to a contaminated environment. One of the most obvious risks associated with glass is its ability to create sharp shards that can cause serious cuts and injuries.
In addition, small particles of glass, which can be formed in the process of demolishing buildings or improper storage of waste, pose a danger to the respiratory system. Getting such particles into the lungs can lead to the development of respiratory diseases, including chronic bronchitis and even lung cancer. This especially applies to workers at construction sites and people who live near landfills.
There is also the risk of chemical contamination, which can occur due to residues of paints, sealants or other chemicals remaining on glass surfaces. Inhalation or contact with these substances can cause allergic reactions, skin and eye irritation, and more serious health problems.
Transportation of waste glass can also be associated with risks to people. Improper transportation can cause glass to scatter on the road, creating a hazard for other road users. It is also important to ensure proper packaging and storage of waste glass during transportation to avoid leakage of hazardous substances.
Ways to reduce harm
Reducing damage from glass waste requires a comprehensive approach that includes both preventive measures and effective methods of glass waste management. One of the key aspects in this context – this is the introduction of a glass sorting and recycling system, which allows to significantly reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.
Methods of ecological management of glass waste include the following measures:
- operations for collecting, sorting, crushing and processing waste glass (D13);
- using glass waste as a secondary raw material for the production of new building materials (R7);
- introduction of innovative technologies for glass processing;
- educational campaigns aimed at raising awareness of the problem of glass waste.
Effective management of glass waste also includes control over the processes of transportation and storage of glass waste. It is important to ensure that glass waste is transported in accordance with environmental standards, with minimal risk to the environment and human health. In addition, it is necessary to properly store waste at specialized sites, where it will not pose a threat to the environment.
