19 07 Filtrate from landfills

whyneed

Leachate from landfills is one of the biggest environmental problems arising from the accumulation of waste in landfills. This term refers to the liquid that forms when water passes through waste and extracts soluble substances from it. The filtrate is a toxic mixture of organic and inorganic compounds, heavy metals, chemicals, and decay products of organic materials. The problem of leachate from landfills becomes even more urgent due to the fact that every year the amount of waste entering landfills increases, and therefore the volume of leachate also increases.

Primary sources of leachate include rainwater that seeps through the waste and other liquids entering the landfill, such as industrial and domestic runoff. Without proper management, leachate can seep into soil and groundwater, causing contamination over large areas. Insufficient sealing and a poor leachate collection system can lead to large-scale environmental disasters when toxic substances enter the environment.

Filtrate can contain a wide range of contaminants, including organic compounds, heavy metals, pathogens, and various chemicals that can have long-term negative effects on human health and the environment. The problem is compounded by the fact that landfills are often located near residential areas or natural water resources, increasing the risk of contamination of drinking water and soil. Services for waste management, collection and processing: Filtrate from landfills Code NPV 19 07.

Filtrate from landfills. Code according to the National List of Waste 19 07. Operations according to Appendices 1, 2 to the Law of Ukraine "On Waste Management" D13, R5.

A pity for the environment and people

howutilize

Leachate from landfills is a serious threat to the environment because of its ability to spread pollutants over long distances. One of the most serious consequences is groundwater contamination, which can lead to the loss of sources of drinking water. When leachate enters groundwater, it can remain there for a long time, continuously degrading water quality.

Soil pollution is another serious problem. Toxic substances contained in the leachate can penetrate the soil and destroy beneficial microorganisms that play a key role in maintaining soil fertility. This can lead to land degradation, which, in turn, affects agricultural production and ecosystems.

In addition, leachate can enter surface waters, polluting rivers, lakes and other water bodies. This can have catastrophic consequences for aquatic ecosystems, including the death of fish and other aquatic organisms. Pollution of reservoirs also affects the quality of water used for irrigation and drinking, which can pose serious threats to public health.

Pity for people

Leachate from landfills has a significant impact on human health, especially those who live near landfills or use water from sources contaminated with leachate. The biggest threat is heavy metals, organic compounds and pathogens that can cause a wide range of diseases.

Heavy metals such as lead, cadmium and mercury are extremely toxic to humans. They can cause serious health problems, including neurological disorders, heart disease, cancer and other chronic diseases. Organic compounds contained in the leachate can be carcinogenic and also pose a serious threat to health.

Pathogens such as viruses and bacteria that may be present in the leachate are a source of infectious diseases. Contaminated water or food grown on contaminated soil can cause disease outbreaks in the population. Additionally, long-term exposure to leachate toxicants can cause delayed effects that manifest years or even decades after exposure to contaminated materials.

Ways to reduce harm

whyneed

Methods of environmental management of leachate waste from landfills are key to reducing the negative impact on the environment and human health. The main approach is to prevent the formation of leachate through proper management of landfills and the implementation of modern technologies, such as leachate collection and treatment systems.

  • Operations for collecting, sorting, crushing and processing (D13) waste leachate from landfills can significantly reduce the amount of pollutants entering the leachate.
  • Environmental management of leachate waste from landfills involves the use of barrier systems, such as geomembranes, to prevent leachate from entering the soil and groundwater.
  • Transportation of leachate waste from landfills to specialized facilities for their further cleaning and processing (R5) is an important element of environmental management.

Cleaning of leachate can involve the use of various physico-chemical and biological methods, such as aeration, filtration, coagulation and bioremediation. These methods make it possible to remove most of the pollutants from the leachate, turning it into an environmentally safe liquid.
