Fixing mixtures and solutions

Fixing or mounting solutions are widely used in photography, radiography, and other industries to preserve images on light-sensitive materials. Despite their importance, such solutions pose a serious environmental threat. They contain heavy metals such as silver, which can contaminate water and soil, as well as other chemicals that adversely affect human health and the environment.

Fixative solutions contain a variety of chemicals that require a special management approach during use and after expiration. The main components of these solutions are silver, ammonium thiosulfate, sodium thiosulfate and other chemicals. Considering the fact that such solutions are used in large quantities, the issue of proper management of hazardous waste of fixing (fixing) solutions arises.

Incorrect handling of these wastes can lead to serious environmental problems. Chemicals contained in fixatives can enter the environment through drains or illegal dumping in landfills, where they seep into groundwater, contaminating it. In addition, these substances can enter rivers and lakes, which leads to a decrease in water quality and the death of aquatic organisms.

Reduction of damage from fixing solutions is possible thanks to the introduction of methods of environmental management of hazardous waste. The main measures include:

• reducing the use of hazardous substances: the use of alternative, less harmful chemical compounds can significantly reduce the negative impact on the environment and human health;
• recycling and reuse: the collection and processing of waste fixative solutions allows the extraction of valuable metals such as silver, which contributes to the reduction of the total volume of hazardous waste;
• improvement of storage and transportation methods: ensuring proper storage and transportation of hazardous waste reduces the risk of accidental releases and spills;
• Education and awareness raising: Educating workers and the public about the proper handling of fixatives helps reduce improper disposal and improves the overall health of the environment.
