Explosive elements (for example, airbags)

Explosive components such as airbags pose a serious threat to the environment and human health. Explosive components, such as airbags, contain chemicals that can cause an explosion if mishandled. The airbags are equipped with pyrotechnic chargers that deploy the airbag in the event of a vehicle collision. They consist of sodium azides, which, upon detonation, emit hot gases that quickly fill the cushion. The problem is that old or damaged airbags can become unstable and explosive.

In addition to airbags, explosive components also include other automotive components, such as pyrotechnic seat belt pretensioners. They also contain explosives, making them dangerous to handle.

The main problems encountered when handling explosive components include:

• special operations for collecting and sorting explosive components;
• use of specialized containers (D12) for transportation of hazardous waste;
• shredding and processing of hazardous waste in safe conditions;
• ensuring proper training and informing employees.
