In today's world, the problem of waste is becoming more and more urgent. One of the least studied, but no less important categories of waste is other types of waste. This category includes a variety of wastes that do not fall under standard classifications, but have a significant impact on the environment and human health.
Other types of waste can include anything from electronic devices to construction materials that contain hazardous substances. Due to the lack of clear classification and regulation, this waste often ends up in landfills, where it can decompose for decades, contaminating soils, water resources and the atmosphere.
The lack of an appropriate management system for other hazardous waste leads to their uncontrolled accumulation. Environmental management methods for other hazardous wastes are often insufficiently effective or absent at all, which creates additional risks for the environment and human health.

A pity for the environment and people
The main threat posed by other types of waste to the environment lies in their composition. Often these wastes contain heavy metals, chemicals and other toxic components. Heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium and lead can enter soils and water resources, causing long-term pollution. This can lead to a decrease in soil fertility and loss of biodiversity. Chemical substances contained in other types of waste can interact with natural components of the ecosystem, forming new toxic compounds.
Operations for collection, sorting, crushing and processing (D13) of hazardous other waste are often accompanied by emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere. This leads to air pollution and contributes to global warming. Improper storage and transportation of other hazardous waste can lead to leaks, which create an additional threat to the environment.
Burning other types of waste can be a source of emissions of dioxins and furans, which are extremely toxic to humans and animals. These substances can accumulate in the food chain, affecting all levels of the ecosystem, from microorganisms to large predators. Dioxins and furans can remain in the environment for years, causing long-term pollution.
Pity for people
Waste that contains hazardous substances can have a serious impact on human health. Toxic components can enter the body through the respiratory tract, skin or with food. This can lead to various diseases, from allergies to serious chronic diseases and oncological diseases.
Children and the elderly are the most vulnerable to the negative effects of other hazardous wastes. Constant contact with toxic substances can lead to a decrease in immunity and general deterioration of health. Heavy metals can accumulate in the body, causing damage to the nervous system, kidneys and other organs.
Mercury, which is often found in e-waste, is extremely dangerous. It can lead to neurological disorders, problems with memory and coordination of movements. Lead, found in many building materials, can cause poisoning that manifests as anemia, kidney problems, and damage to the central nervous system.
Dangerous chemicals contained in other types of waste can cause allergic reactions, skin and mucous membrane irritation. Long-term contact with toxic substances can lead to the development of chronic diseases, such as asthma, bronchitis and other respiratory diseases. Improper handling of other hazardous waste can lead to acute poisoning, which can be fatal.
Ways to reduce harm
In order to reduce harm from other types of waste, it is necessary to implement effective methods of environmental management of hazardous other waste. This includes the use of advanced technologies for their processing and storage (D15). An important aspect is the implementation of a system of control over the circulation of hazardous waste, which will reduce risks to the environment and human health.
The key measures are:
- implementation of modern technologies for processing and storage of waste;
- training of personnel on proper handling of hazardous waste;
- creating national programs to control the circulation of other hazardous waste;
- development and implementation of standards for environmental management of other hazardous waste.
