17 09 03* Other construction and demolition waste (including mixed waste) containing hazardous substances
The construction industry has always been an important part of the economy, but its activity generates a significant amount of waste. One of the biggest problems is other construction and demolition waste (including mixed waste) containing hazardous substances. This waste may include the remains of construction materials, chemicals, metals, asbestos and other hazardous components.
Mixed construction waste contains a variety of materials, which makes its treatment a complex process. Methods of environmental management of hazardous waste of other construction and demolition waste (including mixed waste) containing hazardous substances require a special approach and appropriate infrastructure for their collection, sorting, transportation and processing (D13).
The problem is further complicated by the fact that other construction and demolition waste (including mixed waste) containing hazardous substances is often not properly controlled and treated. Many construction companies neglect the rules of collection and storage (D15) of such waste, which leads to their illegal removal to landfills or being left on construction sites.
Among the main components of hazardous construction waste, the following can be distinguished:
- asbestos materials that cause serious diseases of the respiratory system;
- chemical substances that can penetrate into the soil and water;
- metals that pose a threat to the environment and human health;
- contaminated construction materials that require special treatment.
The absence of a proper system of collection and treatment of these wastes leads to their accumulation, which creates additional risks for the environment and public health. Methods of environmental management of hazardous waste of other construction and demolition waste (including mixed waste) containing hazardous substances must take into account all aspects - from initial collection to final destruction or recycling (R4).
Construction and demolition wastes containing PCB-containing insulators, PCB-containing coatings (for floors) based on resin, PCB-containing glass block sealants, PCB-containing capacitors. Code according to the National list of waste 17 09 01*. Operations in accordance with Annexes 1, 2 to the Law of Ukraine “On Waste Management” D15, D13, R4.
A pity for the environment and people
The impact of hazardous waste on the environment is significant. When other construction and demolition waste (including mixed waste) containing hazardous substances enters the environment, it can contaminate soil, water and air. This leads to disruption of ecosystems and can have serious consequences for wildlife and human health.
The main environmental problems associated with hazardous construction waste:
- pollution of water resources with chemical substances;
- deterioration of soil quality due to heavy metals and toxic substances;
- emissions of hazardous gases into the atmosphere during improper waste processing;
- spread of invasive species of plants and animals due to movement of soil and materials.
Pity for people
Dangerous construction waste has a negative impact on people's health. When demolishing buildings or processing waste containing hazardous substances, workers may be exposed to toxic fumes, dust, and other hazardous substances. This can cause serious illnesses such as respiratory problems, chemical burns, allergic reactions and even cancer.
The main risks to human health:
- inhalation of toxic dusts and fumes;
- skin contact with chemicals;
- consumption of contaminated water and food;
- long stay in areas with a high level of pollution.
Ways to reduce harm
Environmental management of hazardous waste of other construction and demolition waste (including mixed waste) containing hazardous substances is an important task to reduce their negative impact on the environment and human health. Here are some basic methods that can be used:
- implementation of modern technologies for the collection and processing of hazardous waste;
- development and compliance with strict safety standards and norms;
- organization of training programs for workers on safe handling of hazardous materials;
- increasing control and monitoring of waste processing processes.
Hazardous waste management of other construction and demolition waste (including mixed waste) containing hazardous substances should include an integrated approach that takes into account all stages - from collection to final treatment. An important aspect is the transportation of hazardous waste and other construction and demolition waste (including mixed waste) containing hazardous substances, which must be organized in compliance with all safety and environmental standards.
