Hazardous components in electrical equipment

In today's world, the use of electrical and electronic equipment is an integral part of our everyday life. From computers to mobile phones, from TVs to home appliances, these devices make our lives easier, more comfortable and more efficient. However, during its entire existence, this equipment accumulates dangerous components that can negatively affect the environment and people's health.

Electrical and electronic equipment contains many dangerous components that can cause significant damage. These include heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium, as well as chemicals such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). These components can penetrate into the soil, water and air, creating a threat to ecosystems and human health.

The problem is exacerbated by the fact that the volume of waste electrical and electronic equipment is constantly growing. According to research, millions of tons of such waste are produced annually in the world, and only a small part of it is properly treated. Most of the waste ends up in landfills, where it remains without proper control and treatment.

Methods of environmental management of hazardous waste electrical and electronic equipment containing hazardous components are not sufficiently developed, which leads to serious environmental problems.

In order to reduce the damage caused by hazardous components in electrical and electronic equipment, it is necessary to implement effective methods of environmental management of hazardous waste. The management of hazardous waste electrical and electronic equipment containing hazardous components must be carried out at all stages of the waste life cycle: from collection and transportation to final treatment and storage (R13).

Among the damage reduction methods, we can highlight:

• development of waste collection and sorting systems for their further safe processing (R4);
• implementation of modern technologies for processing and storage of hazardous waste;
• increasing public awareness of the need for proper handling of waste electrical and electronic equipment;
• development and implementation of legislative and regulatory acts regulating hazardous waste management.
