Metal slurries formed during grinding, honing and lapping processes are one of the most urgent problems in the field of industrial waste. Hazardous metal sludge waste also poses a serious threat to human health. They can enter the body through the respiratory tract, skin or through food contaminated with heavy metals and chemicals from olives.
The main risks to human health include:
- toxicity: heavy metals such as lead and mercury can cause serious poisoning;
- carcinogenicity: some chemicals contained in olives have carcinogenic properties;
- respiratory diseases: dust and fumes of metal sludges can cause diseases of the respiratory tract;

For example, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are often found in oils, are highly carcinogenic and can lead to the development of cancer of the lungs, skin, bladder and other organs.
Thus, hazardous metal sludge wastes containing oils pose a serious threat to human health, and all possible measures must be taken for their effective management and treatment.
