16 12 09*, 17 02 04* Wood, glass and plastics containing or contaminated with dangerous substances
In today's world, the problem of managing hazardous waste of wood, glass and plastics containing or contaminated with hazardous substances is becoming more and more urgent. These materials are widely used in various industries, construction and everyday life, which leads to the accumulation of significant amounts of waste. Hazardous substances contained in these materials pose a serious threat to the environment and human health.
Wood, glass and plastics, which contain dangerous substances, often become an integral part of the waste generated as a result of various production processes and consumption of goods. Hazardous substances can include heavy metals, toxic chemicals, radioactive elements, and other harmful components. Their presence in waste increases risks for the environment and public health.
The main sources of hazardous wood, glass and plastic waste include:
- production enterprises;
- construction and dismantling works;
- household waste;
- electronic equipment and technology.
These materials can be contaminated at various stages of their life cycle, from production to recycling. Hazardous substances enter waste through the use of chemicals in production, improper storage and transportation, and improper neutralization. Methods of environmental management of hazardous wood, glass and plastic waste containing or contaminated with hazardous substances are important for reducing their negative impact on the environment.
In addition, the growing volume of waste puts additional pressure on existing waste management systems, which are often unable to cope with the volumes and types of hazardous materials. This increases the risk of illegal dumping of waste and other illegal actions, which worsens the situation.
Wood, glass and plastics containing or contaminated with hazardous substances. Code according to the National list of waste 16 12 09*, 17 02 04*. Operations in accordance with Annexes 1, 2 to the Law of Ukraine “On Waste Management” D10, D15.
Code according to Annexes VIII, IX to the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Utilization/Removal А4040 (AD030), А4040 (AD030).
A pity for the environment and people
Hazardous waste wood, glass and plastics have a significant impact on the environment. They can cause air, water and soil pollution, which leads to negative environmental consequences. The decay of these materials can release toxic substances that enter the environment, harming flora and fauna.
The main environmental problems associated with hazardous waste include:
- pollution of water resources: toxic substances can enter underground and surface water, which negatively affects aquatic ecosystems and the quality of drinking water;
- decrease in air quality: emissions of hazardous substances into the air can cause air pollution and affect the health of the population;
- soil degradation: heavy metals and other toxic substances can accumulate in soils, which leads to their degradation and reduced productivity;
- biodiversity loss: hazardous waste can cause the death of plants and animals, leading to the loss of biodiversity.
Environmental management of hazardous wood, glass and plastics containing or contaminated with hazardous substances is key to reducing their negative impact on the environment. This includes the development and implementation of technologies that allow the safe treatment and disposal of hazardous waste (D10), as well as the implementation of monitoring and control systems.
Pity for people
Hazardous waste wood, glass and plastics also pose a serious threat to human health. Exposure to toxic substances contained in these wastes can lead to various diseases and negative consequences for the body. Contact with hazardous waste can occur through inhalation of vapors, skin contact, or ingestion of contaminated water or food.
The main risks to human health include:
- respiratory tract diseases: inhalation of vapors of toxic substances can cause bronchitis, asthma and other respiratory diseases
- skin diseases: contact with hazardous waste can cause dermatitis, eczema and other skin diseases
- oncological diseases: long-term exposure to certain dangerous substances can increase the risk of developing cancer diseases
- allergic reactions: toxic substances can cause allergies and other immunological reactions
In order to minimize risks to human health, it is necessary to ensure proper management of hazardous wood, glass and plastic waste containing or contaminated with hazardous substances. This includes the use of safe treatment methods, the proper storage and transportation of hazardous waste, and the implementation of measures to protect workers who handle such waste.
Ways to reduce harm
In order to reduce the negative impact of hazardous wood, glass, and plastic waste on the environment and human health, it is necessary to implement comprehensive environmental management measures for hazardous wood, glass, and plastic waste containing or contaminated with hazardous substances. This includes:
- implementation of effective waste processing and disposal technologies: modern technologies allow safe processing of hazardous waste, reducing their negative impact on the environment and human health;
- creation of a system of collection, sorting and storage (D15) of hazardous waste: organized collection systems allow to reduce the risk of incorrect disposal of waste and increase the efficiency of its processing;
- use of safe methods of transportation of hazardous wood, glass and plastic waste: transportation must be carried out in accordance with all norms and standards to prevent leaks and pollution;
- increasing the level of public awareness of the dangers and methods of managing hazardous waste: information campaigns help to increase public awareness of the correct management of hazardous waste and reduce risks to the environment and health.
Effective management of hazardous wood, glass and plastic waste containing or contaminated with hazardous substances also includes cooperation with scientific institutions and the introduction of new technologies that allow reducing the volume of hazardous waste generation and increasing the efficiency of its processing.< /p>
