13 01 01* Hydraulic lubricants (oils) containing polychlorinated biphenyls
Hydraulic lubricants (oils) containing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a serious environmental problem today. These chemicals have been widely used in industrial processes because of their unique properties. However, their high toxicity and resistance to decay make them extremely dangerous for the environment and human health. In this article, we will consider the main aspects of the problem associated with the use of PCBs in hydraulic oils, as well as methods of environmental management of hazardous waste.
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) – is a group of synthetic chemicals consisting of two connected benzene rings with substituted chlorine atoms. Due to their chemical properties, PCBs have been widely used in various industries, including the production of hydraulic oils. However, over time it became obvious that PCBs are extremely toxic and resistant to biological degradation, which leads to their accumulation in the environment.
The main problem with using PCBs in hydraulic oils is their high resistance to decomposition. These substances can remain in water, soil and air for decades, causing contamination of large areas. In addition, PCBs can accumulate in the food chain, which leads to their accumulation in the bodies of animals and humans.
The use of PCB hydraulic oils poses a serious threat to the environment and human health. To solve this problem, it is necessary to implement effective methods of environmental management of hazardous waste.
A pity for the environment and people
Polychlorinated biphenyls contained in hydraulic oils are one of the most dangerous environmental pollutants. They can enter water, soil, and air during use or improper waste management. Due to their chemical stability, PCBs do not decompose naturally and remain in the environment for many years.
The main ways of PCB environmental pollution include:
- leakage of hydraulic oils from industrial installations;
- improper storage and disposal of waste containing PCBs;
- evaporation of PCBs into the air from contaminated materials.
Polychlorinated biphenyls can accumulate in the organisms of aquatic animals, plants and microorganisms, which disrupts ecosystems and reduces biodiversity. In addition, PCBs are able to be transported over long distances with the help of air masses and water currents, which leads to global pollution.
Hydraulic lubricants (oils) containing polychlorinated biphenyls. Code according to the National list of waste 13 01 01*. Operations in accordance with Annexes 1, 2 to the Law of Ukraine "On Waste Management" R9, R13.
Code according to Annexes VIII, IX to the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Utilization/Removal A3180 (RA010)
Pity for people
Hydraulic oils containing polychlorinated biphenyls pose a serious threat to human health. PCBs can enter the human body through food, water or air. They tend to accumulate in fatty tissues, which leads to their long-term effect on the body.
The main ways PCBs enter the human body:
- consumption of contaminated food (especially fish and seafood);
- consumption of contaminated water;
- breathing air containing PCBs.
The impact of PCBs on human health can cause serious diseases such as cancer, immune system dysfunction, reproductive problems and nervous system disorders. Long-term exposure to PCBs can also lead to the development of chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Ways to reduce harm
In order to reduce the harm from hydraulic lubricants containing polychlorinated biphenyls, it is necessary to apply a comprehensive approach to hazardous waste management. Methods of environmental management of hazardous waste include a number of measures aimed at reducing the impact of PCBs on the environment and human health (R9).
Main measures for the management of PCB hazardous waste:
- implementation of technologies for safe collection, sorting, crushing and processing of waste;
- creating specialized landfills for waste storage and disposal;
- application of modern methods of cleaning water and air from PCBs;
- development and implementation of training and awareness programs about the dangers of PCBs;
- monitoring and control of the state of the environment for PCB contamination.
Operations for the collection, sorting, crushing and processing of hazardous waste hydraulic lubricants (oils) containing polychlorinated biphenyls must be performed in compliance with all regulatory requirements and safety standards. This will ensure the minimization of risks to the environment and human health.
Transportation of hazardous waste hydraulic lubricants (oils) containing polychlorinated biphenyls must also be carried out in compliance with all safety rules and standards. The use of specialized transport and equipment allows to reduce the risks of leakage and contamination during transportation.
