12 01 06* Lubricating and cooling liquids on a mineral basis for machining, containing halogens (except emulsions and solutions)
Mineral-based lubricating and cooling fluids (MOFs) are an integral part of modern machining. They are used to reduce friction, cool tools and parts during metalworking. However, halogenated POPs are a significant environmental concern, as halogens (such as chlorine and fluorine) can have toxic effects on the environment and human health.
Lubricating and cooling liquids on a mineral basis with halogens are widely used in various industries. They are effective in providing adequate lubrication and cooling during metal machining. However, due to their chemical composition, these fluids can cause serious problems if not properly neutralized. Halogens contained in MOR can enter the soil, water resources and air, causing significant damage to the environment and human health.
Halogens such as chlorine, fluorine, bromine, and iodine have high chemical activity. They are used in the composition of lubricating and cooling fluids to increase their efficiency, but at the same time they increase the toxicity of these fluids. During the use of MOR in production, halogen particles can enter the air and water, creating a risk of environmental pollution. Improper storage of used liquids also leads to the accumulation of toxic substances in the soil and water bodies.
A pity for the environment and people
Mineral-based lubricants and coolants containing halogens can have a serious negative impact on ecosystems. Halogens are highly toxic and can accumulate in soil and water resources. They can cause the death of plants and animals, as well as pollution of drinking water. In addition, halogens can interact with other chemicals, forming dangerous compounds that can further worsen the environmental situation.
The entry of halogens into water resources can lead to a decrease in water quality and the death of aquatic organisms. Even small concentrations of halogens can be toxic to fish and other aquatic animals. Halogens can accumulate in the soil, changing its chemical composition and reducing fertility. This can lead to a decrease in the yield of agricultural crops and the destruction of natural ecosystems.
In addition, halogens can affect microorganisms that participate in the processes of decomposition of organic substances and water purification. This can lead to the disruption of natural biochemical cycles and a decrease in the ability of ecosystems to self-renew.
Pity for people
Contact with lubricating and cooling fluids containing halogens can have serious consequences for human health. Inhaling the vapors of these liquids can cause respiratory tract irritation, allergic reactions, and other respiratory problems. Contact with the skin can cause dermatitis and other skin diseases. In the long term, exposure to halogens can lead to serious diseases such as cancer.
Halogens contained in MOR can have carcinogenic properties. Long-term contact with these substances can lead to the development of malignant tumors in the respiratory tract, liver, kidneys and other organs. Inhalation of vapors and aerosols containing halogens is especially dangerous. This can lead to the development of chronic diseases of the respiratory system, such as asthma and chronic bronchitis.
Contact with halogens can also cause allergic reactions and dermatitis. Skin that comes into contact with liquids may become red, itchy, and scaly. In some cases, more serious skin lesions such as ulcers and eczema are possible. It is necessary to ensure appropriate safety measures, such as the use of protective clothing and masks, for workers who are in constant contact with MOR.
Ways to reduce harm
In order to reduce the damage that may be caused by mineral-based coolants with halogens, it is necessary to apply comprehensive environmental management measures. The main methods include:
- collection of spent liquids in special containers for further treatment (R13);
- sorting liquids by composition for more efficient processing;
- crushing liquids to reduce their volume and facilitate processing;
- use of modern technologies for safe treatment and disposal of waste (R9).
Methods of environmental management of hazardous wastes of mineral-based engine coolants containing halogens (except emulsions and solutions) should include all stages of waste treatment – from collection to transportation and disposal.
In order to effectively reduce damage, it is necessary to implement innovative technologies that allow to reduce the toxicity of spent MOR. These can be chemical cleaning methods that neutralize halogens, or physicochemical methods that remove toxic components from liquids. In addition, it is important to conduct regular monitoring of the state of the environment in order to timely identify and eliminate sources of pollution.
